need advice re haircut drama
DS had had like maybe 8-10 haircuts in his three years and his first was fine, his second was ok... from then on he is just a demon....screams, crys, jumps around
He ends up with a terrible haircut and he is a disaster for like half and hour after
A lollipop doesn't help, tv doesn't help, toy doesn't help.... anyone have any experience with this and any advice?
He needs a birthday haircut and I am dreading it

Do you know someone who is good at doing a trim? Maybe if it is someone he knows it would be easier on him?

I suppose you've tried this already, but what if he sits in your lap?

need advice re haircut drama
I have done it while they are in a bath. I find they don't realize it as much.

With a scissor I assume you mean? I would be so worried about slipping.

Re: need advice re haircut drama
DS used to be horrible!! I was asked to leave a salon once. Ugh! Once I started putting my ego aside I took him to a kids place where he can pick his seat either a cop car, firetruck, tractor, etc. LOL! He liked that and then they have a Dora episode on with her getting a cut. I took a video of it asking him to smile, complimenting what a big boy he was, handsome, and how we'd get ice-cream after (especially since the kids place is at the mall... LOL). Seemed to work that time and I showed him the video each time he was going to get a haircut. As the cuts got better the videos of him got better where he saw it wasn't scary, it was easy and fast. Now he doesn't even watch the video anymore.
Maybe something like that would work?

Yes my son screams and cries the entire time. He is 2.9 years old and has gotten at least 8 haircuts. He sits on one of our lap and the other person holds his hands or head when needed. It's stressful but he needs it cut sometimes.

Well when their hair was dry still and I would just group the hair in one hand and snip. Never had an issue. Both kids had long hair (like the surfer look) so it wasn't some close cut, kwim? Took a few seconds and that was it.
Little one still has surfer hair. Older one now has short hair (his choice).

Re: need advice re haircut drama
My son finally started to be ok at around 3 1/2. My DH and I would both go. My son would sit on my lap and I'd literally have to keep his legs down and hold his arms. It was really tough. I would no doubt be covered with hair from his squirming, all while stressing out and sweating through it.
We tried so many different places...kids shops, barber shops, women hair cutters (surprisingly NOT the most patient, one even intentionally squirted a water bottle in my son's face). We finally found one barber shop that my son is OK going to. The guy is so patient with my son. Now he talks the whole time to the barber, rambling on about any old thing. So happy those years are behind us.
It does get better!

Does he like Team Umizoomi? There's an episode where the characters get a haircut. Ds was much better after watching that. I think it's called Haircut Hijinx.

Re: need advice re haircut drama
Thanks everyone. Good to know it gets better. Will for sure try the video if himself thing. Sitting on my lap doesn't help I literally have to hold him down. He doesn't care about the tv or the car or jeep seats. He is just an animal the entire time.

need advice re haircut drama
My nephew was like that. My sister started doing it herself and it looked terrible. Finally she took him to the barber while my BIL was getting his haircut. It worked. They now go to the barber together.

Re: need advice re haircut drama
My almost 3 year old is a DEVIL at hte barber. I have tried kids places where he sat in a race car, going with his big brother, going iwth DH, going to male barbers, going to female barber. I have bribed him with all his favorite things...nothing has worked.
I have somone coming to the house to do my hair and I am hoping this might work because otherwise I am throwing in the towel.
For now if htis doesnt work, I trim his hair while he is in the bath, the best i can!

Re: need advice re haircut drama
Have you tried a regular barber. My older ds likes my stylist to cut his hair and my 2nd guy goes to the barber and sits on my lap. My 1st hated the kids place.

Re: need advice re haircut drama
Not sure if this would help but maybe try to go at an off time when there aren't many people there? My dd's first haircut we did when she was 2 and we did go to a kid's place with the car chairs and t.v., but we did it at 5:30 on a friday night. We happened to be the only ones there and I think that helped.
