Hi Ladies,

Been ttc'ing for 11 months. I have to go for this procedure. For anyone who has had it - please give me the good, the bad and the ugly. Painful? Awkward??

Thanks!!

It is uncomfortable. It's like AF cramps. The worst of the cramping for me was during the procedure, which is about 5-10 minutes. After, I had minor cramping for about 10-15 minutes and that was that. My tubes weren't blocked and I have heard it is less painful when they are open.
It's awkward because you are there spread eagle with cramping and a doctor in your vajaja.

One of my friends had the HSG and she was in a lot of pain because one of the tubes was blocked. Her pain lasted about a half an hour after the procedure ended.

The good thing is if your tubes are blocked, they can unblock them with a simple procedure and you can try to TTC again soon. If they aren't blocked then they say it increases your chances of getting pregnant after.

The procedure is quick and then you go on with your day.

Re: Hysterosalpingogram

found it very uncomfortable hold your breath type pain for me but it was quick. I did take alleve before the procedure and felt fine to go shopping afterward. The awkward thing was there was like 5 people in the room while it was being done. Good luck sometimes this clears the tubes and ttc is achieved quickly

I didn't have much pain at all; it's just uncomfortable. I've heard that if your tubes are blocked, you have pain...my tubes were clear so that may be why i didnt have much pain. The RE suggested I take ibuprofen about an hour before the test to help with cramping. I had gotten myself into such a tizzy before the test bc I had heard both good and bad but it's a pretty quick process...done in about 5 mins & not bad (at least for me it wasn't). Good luck!!!

Mine was no big deal, but my tubes are not blocked. I took 4 advil beforehand and had no cramping whatsoever. Good luck!

Re: Hysterosalpingogram

Like the others said it's a quick procedure but you may feel some pressure and cramping. I had mine done at Mather Hospital and the nurse was really great. I think the most uncomfortable part was when they clamp down your cervix. Take motrin ahead of time and again afterwards. My tubes weren't blocked and I was allowed to watch the procedure on screen which takes your mind off the position you're in. Many girls, an old friend included, have gotten pregnant on the cycle following the HSG because even if their tubes weren't blocked the dye seems to clean them out. Good Luck!! Chat Icon

I took a pain killer ahead of time. Not sure if it really did anything. The procedure was about 15 minutes I think. I didn't have the best experience. A lot of pinching and cramping and it hurt. I was glad when it was over. I have spoken to other people who had better experiences. My tubes weren't blocked. Good luck.

I didn't have any pain. Was in and out in an hour and could have gone to work.

Re: Hysterosalpingogram

My tube was blocked and still no pain. Just more awkward than anything with the plastic speculum in while legs are flat on the table.. But it's very fast. I don't recommend zwanger.. Nrad has a much softer approach!

I took an Advil before and had no pain. I did have a blockage and it still was fine. It was pretty quick Had Zwanger in Stony Brook do mine and my only complaint was they never sent my report like they said.

Re: Hysterosalpingogram

I had SEVERE pain but I had a blockage on one side. The SEVERE pain I felt was only for a few minutes, I almost fainted…but once the test was over it subsided. The good news is I felt fine like 30 min later and went out to eat and everything, lol!

Re: Hysterosalpingogram

I took Advil before. The procedure itself was quite uncomfortable but it only lasts about 10 minutes. I had a little bit of cramping after but nothing terrible at all. My tubes were clear and we found out we were pregnant a month later. The anticipation of it was much worse than the actual procedure.

Re: Hysterosalpingogram

Hi Denise~I had an HSG last May and I was expecting the worst but it truly wasn't for me. In my experience the most uncomfortable part was the speculum (which they use every time you go to your GYN for your annual PAP). My opinion is that if it takes 4 cranks to open, they should take it down 4 cranks before removing it!Chat Icon
This was what happened for me. Went in, got into the stylish robe and had to take a preg. test first. Once in the exam room-lie on a flat x-ray table. Awkward alert~had to lie there with my heels together and knees completely out to the sides. No dignity what-so-ever. Then the speculum, then they place a thin tube(which will deposit the dye in your uterus). For me I could feel what I can best describe as slightly uncomfortable tickling as the tube passes the cervix. I just tried to breathe normally and think about what I would learn from this procedure once it was over. Once in place, they inject the dye and I don't remember any discomfort. Once the dye is in, they pull a large microwave-looking box over you and take xrays. Last awkward part~I have a lower belly pooch and the doctor had me pull it up flat so xrays would be more clear. Less fat to go through, ugh.
I did have to lean to one side just to get the dye moving and it did flow through my one side. I no longer have 2 ovaries/2 tubes thanks to endometriosis. After that, the speculum was removed and I was all done.
I know it's not easy to relax when you're going to explore anything that potentially measures your fertility, but I found that if I just got over the embarrassment/fear/worry for me there was no pain or discomfort involved with this procedure. Just a little awkwardness. Best of luck, breathe and try to stay calm.
