Re: Hysterosalpingogram?

Yes, it's an HSG. The experience is different for every woman. Some say it doesn't hurt (nothing more than AF like cramps), some say it does. For me, it did hurt badly. They put a catheter in and inject dye to see if your tubes are open. DH came with me and waited in the car, but I didn't need him. Take tylenol about a half hour before you go.

Thanks! I figured I would just go alone because I didn't want DH to have to go to work late.

Re: Hysterosalpingogram?

I took tylenol before. It was very uncomfortable for me, like strong menstrual cramps but like PP said, it is pretty quick and as soon as they were done, I felt fine and even went to the gym that night and had no discomfort after at all.

It is a good idea to have someone drive you just in case you are not feeling well after, but from what I hear, most people are fine.

Re: Hysterosalpingogram?

I had two (one before each pregnancy).
The first time DH drove me to and I thought it was very painful. I have a tight cervix so the part when they would struggle to pry it open was very painful for me.
After giving birth to my first DC, I realized that the HSG pain was NOTHING so for round 2 I went alone, drove my self there and home. I didn't take any pain meds but was told I could take tylenol.

Re: Hysterosalpingogram?

i had a very bad experience with my HSGs.
i wish i had brought someone with me b/c it was painful physically and emotionally.
take 3 advil 1 hour beforehand.
my dr said tylenol will make things worse.

that being said, most people just have mild cramping.

Re: Hysterosalpingogram?

My HSG was not painful at all, just some very mild cramping... But then again I didn't have any blockage, because from what I hear for women that have blockages it can be a painful experience...Chat Icon I'd take a couple of Advil if I were you about an hour before the procedure just to be on the safe side. I hope it is as painless for you as it was for me. BTW I had mine done at NRAD (Nassau Radiology) and they are an excellent group, I've used them for many different tests and have never been disappointed or in any sort of pain. Good Luck! Re: Hysterosalpingogram?

I had one a few years ago and experienced no pain at all, minor cramping after, but nothing I couldn't handle, and also had some minor spotting for the day. I'm the biggest wimp when it comes to test. I went with my mom, which she doesn't drive, so she was just there for emotional support. I took (3) advils about 45 min. before the procedure, but like previous posters said, if you have a blocked tube, it could be a little more painful, every women is different. I wish you the best.

Just like PP, my HSG went well, no pain whatsoever - during or after. I didn't have any blockages though, so that may have something to do with it. I went by myself and took a motrin beforehand just in case.

Re: Hysterosalpingogram?

I think my doctor told me to take 3 advil before the test. I went by myself and didn't have any cramping or trouble. For me, the test was uncomfortable and unpleasant, but nothing I couldn't handle.
I did have some mild cramping (like a period) later that night.

Good luck!!!!

Re: Hysterosalpingogram?

Test was very quick and relatively painless. The only cramping I felt was when the doctor inserted the catheter and inflated the balloon.

The Doctor was great and showed me the results of the x-ray. I do not have any blockages and all looks good down there!

Thank you to everyone for your advice and words of encouragement!

Re: Hysterosalpingogram?***update***

About three hours after the test I started having severe cramping and belly pain. I left work and came home and passed out. When I woke up I had a fever. It was 101.4 and now it is 100.5.

I just contacted Dr. B's office and the service is going to have him call me.

Re: Hysterosalpingogram?***update***2

Dr. B never called last night. I woke up this morning feeling a million times better. I have slight cramping but nothing like yesterday. I can actually walk today! If I don't hear from him by lunchtime I am going to call.
