Beer for the garbage men?
Do people really do this?
We have lots of trash for pickup (old carpets wrapped as specified).
FIL said we should leave them a 6 pack of beer. I've never heard of this.
DH and I were going to run out and give them a cash tip, but they come at all different times so we never know when they will be here.
I know this is their job, they probably get paid well and it's not everyday we have this much trash, but we wanted to do something. DH said the pile is like the size of a small car

I've never heard of beer given as a gift but then I'd also be afraid they might drink it at lunch & drive their trucks around after  I would do cash tip or gift card for coffee (either DD or Starbucks)

Right!! That's what I thought. Hopefully they drink it after their shift. Seeing as FIL said this, I'm wondering if this is some antiquated tradition they did in Brooklyn 20 years ago. Or some dumb thing only their family did.
We'd prefer to give cash or something because I'm sure they would like that more, but we don't want to miss them. I'm not sure if its always the same guys if we caught them the following week.

It's like a leave it and we will take it on Thurday type thing where we live so it's their job.

I would never leave a worker a beer. Esp while they are on the job. Plus not everyone drinks alcohol, sort of seems like a stereotypical item to leave and someone might actually not be happy to be left beer. JMO
$$$ they would much prefer I am sure

I think giving beer is very old school. I remember my parents doing that 'back in the day', but times have changed.
I would say cash or a gift card would be more appropriate.

my in-laws give the garbage men cases of beer at christmas time instead of a tip  I always thought that was funny.

We normally just give them both a nice tip at the end of the year. I wouldn't feel comfty giving beer as a gift in case the drank it while they were working. I like the Gatorade idea too! <-in addition to cash....we put tons out from renovating our house.

If we have an excess of garbage bc of a home project or something, we always leave them a $$ tip.
We leave a note on one of the cans saying "See Mailbox" and usually leave an envelope that says "Have lunch on us".
I know it's their job, but it's always nice to be appreciated when handed a crap load of work.

Do you tip your post man, newspaper delivery person, fedex guy? I do and I feel like if you like them why not to give them something. It's not mentality, it is something nice to do.
And I always tip or leave something for my garbage men. It is their job to pick my garbage up, but I just want to let them know that I appreciate them and their work.

DH has done this often w/ our village garbagemen. He's done a lot of work in our house & so we've had a lot of garbage. I've never heard of this & thought he was kidding the first time.
Yet a few days later he ran into them & they couldn't thank him enough.
Re: tipping them...we've done it b/c we do appreciate all they do. There's times we put out so much I said there's no way they'll take all this (chopped up fence, sheetrock, etc). If they didn't take it we would have had to have a number of dumpsters through the years.
