How the heck are you supposed to get rid of moving boxes when garbage men don't pick them up?
DH says our garbage men are lazy. Isn't the job of a garbage truck to pick up the garbage? This morning I watched them pick up the pile of broken down boxes our furniture came in, then put it down and not take it.
Grrr...

ok, this is so wrong and probably illegal, but what DH and I did was drive all the boxes to a dumster behind a supermarket. My parents garbage man will only take a max of 10 (town of Smithtown). They must be broken down,etc. So we headed to the dumster and threw them there. Hey we figured the dumster folks would be used to boxes!

Does your town recycle? Ours does and paper (cardboard, etc) goes out every other Weds. It is not picked up by the regular garbage run...it is not their job.

town of oyster bay requires that they boxes be broken down and bagged. that's how we did it.

so funny you bring this up...our garbage men here in nj are the laziest of all time...sometimes they take our boxes and sometimes they don't. this morning i looked outside and the pile of boxes we had neatly stacked and roped together were still there!!!

I know this is an old post, but this was a pet peeve of mine too. I live in NJ, and the garbage men do not take boxes. We have to recycle. But the kicker is, they don't pick up boxes AT ALL when they pick up the recycling. We are supposed to collapse them, tie them and bring them to the center OURSELVES during their 9:00 - 4:00 business hours! You'd think with the $15,000+ in taxes we pay to the town every year, they can pick up the boxes with the papers and bottles/cans!

WOW, our guys took a few broken boxes yesterday.
For the most part tho, my LIF friends who are closing on houses every soon have been stopping over to pick up boxes from me, so that's how they're disappearing from my house.

i feel your pain -
our empty boxes are in the DR
until the furniture comes
we may have to cut them down & tie them up - as it took a few days to get the few we did put out, picked up

this is what I was going to say - boxes should go out with the reycling. call your town and see if anything particular needs to be done with them, but please do recycle!

put them up on craig's list. I totally believe in paying it forward. Buying packing boxes is such a scam. 3 boxes in staples with packing tape is like $25. They're ridiculously expensive and I'm sure between this board where people are always moving and craig's list, you can get a VERY thankful person to come get them. If you must throw them out....definitely put them out on recycle day

I put mine into piles and wrapped them in twine (this is what the website said to do) and they took it on the Wednesday cardboard day.
I felt so bad cause we had so many, but I put them in manageable piles, and I was SO glad to see them gone.

Town of Islip takes everything and anything they are great. What town do you live in. Town of Hempstead is really strict about what they take on garbage days and may require that you call special pick up or put them out on recycle day.

We were lucky and gave ours to someone elese who was moving.
I agree with the suggestion for craigslist or freecycle.
