This is not our fence... it is our neighbor's.

We will be putting up a 6ft fence around our property within the next year or two. Until then, THIS is what we have to look at everyday. Chat Icon It's pretty embarassing to have company over bc this fence is just disgusting. We worked so hard on our home and it just sux that we have to deal with this eye sore.

Is this even allowed? We do not know these people and judging by the screaming matches they have daily, I'm not sure that I even want to complain to them. WWYD? Complain to them, call the town or just suck it up?

TIA!

If it was me, I would call the town and ask them.

wow that is deplorable. I wonder if they know how bad it is since it is hidden behind there bushes. Could you ask them to take that down in the meantime while you are waiting to do your fence. It really isn't doing anything but being an eyesore anyway.

Good Luck and I would put the fence on the top of my list

That's what my DH was thinking. They have those privacy hedges, so I'm sure they don't even know what it looks like.

We JUST redid our driveway, stoop and walkway... so the new fence just isn't in the budget right now. Chat Icon We were thinking of just doing the back part to avoid looking at that fence! LOL

Maybe they think it is your fence?

I'd ask them if they would mind taking it down. If they don't want to, ask if they would care if you did.

Then, when I was ready to, I'd put up my own new fence.

Re: WWYD if this is what you had to look at each and everytime you went into your backyard?

we have no fence, broken fences or a 4 foot fence surrounding us. Until we have the money to put our own fence up there is nothing you really can do. (in our town)

If you plan on putting up a fence back there you can ask the neighbors if you may take down their fence while the new one is going up. If they so no - as your putting the fence up make sure they throw the broken boards back into their yard (in a nice neat way)

Do that. We are doing our fence in sections as well. First year was the front, second year was one side, this year we did the oil tank, ac unit surround. Next year we will do the pool side. Much easier to handle.

We had a very ugly/rusted wire fence that we recently took down bc it was from 1947. It was only 4ft so we saw this fence regardless. Funny thing is, we got a violation notice asking us to do so. It was THAT bad. The town I live in is pretty strict, so I know if I reported it they would get some sort of violation. I just don't want to be that neighbor, KWIM? I also don't think we should have to look at this gross thing!

Doubt there is anything you can do. If its on their property, thats that I am sure. If you dont like it, you have to pay for a fence to block it, just like people put up fences to block all sorts of not so nice views. Until then, it is what it is.

Do they have a pool? If not I dont think theres much you can do except complain about the pieces falling into your yard. Good luck and when you're ready to put a fence up I recommend Port Jeff fence co. I called a bunch of places and got a few estimates. Not only were they the cheapest but my fence was up a couple days after calling!

Re: WWYD if this is what you had to look at each and everytime you went into your backyard?

Honestly, I don't think they would even notice if you took their fence down.

I would really tell them you're going to take it down because its in your yard.

If they have a problem with it, take all the pieces that are in your yard and put them in their yard...and maybe each day take down 2 or 3 planks until the whole fence has 'fallen apart'.Chat Icon

I would take all the falling pieces and stack them on their side of the fence behind the ones that are still hanging.

It's dangerous looking.

I think if you call the town they might tell you to put up your own in front of it. Good Luck!

They do have a pool... so not only is it fugly, but very dangerous too. I think I'm going to take a strategic walk later on tonight and hope to see them outside. If not, I like the idea of stacking the pieces up on their side! Chat Icon

this is what our back fence looks like Chat Icon

BUT there is a chain link fence behind it and I don't have a neighbor behind me (it's open land, with 6 feet or so of shrubbery to cover the fence)

We do plan on repairing it this fall, before the foliage goes and we lose our privacy.

That changes everything! If they have a pool, THEY need to provide YOU with a safe fence. You can totally go down to the town and report them.

hmmmm... maybe you could have the town do something since they have a pool. I believe you have to have a standing fence up when you have a pool.

Re: WWYD if this is what you had to look at each and everytime you went into your backyard?

Honestly I would only call because of the safety reason of the pool.

Otherwise, it appears that you want them to fix their fence so you don't have to buy one.

Thanks everyone! I'm going to talk it over with DH. We will most likely try to talk to them about it before calling the town.

No, not at all! I would prefer there be no fence than that fence. We are going to ultimately buy our own around the perimeter of the property, whether they get a new one or not.
