how do you throw out paint cans?

This might be the dumbest question ever, but can I just throw them in the garbage? or do i need to do something special with them?

What about the pint-size cans I bought to test out paint colors? Basically full with paint.

Not sure where you live, but I know in the Town of Oyster Bay they do "household recycling days". They set up locations where you can bring household waste items, like paint cans, to be disposed of. It's kind of a pain to have to hold onto the stuff until it's time and then bring it somewhere, but it's better for the environment to dispose of these things properly.

I think if the can is empty and the paint is dried you can toss them with trash. If there is still paint in them it's best to follow your town's guidelines for recycling or desposing of items toxic to the environment. Islip has a twice-yearly event in April and Sept. where you can drop off the paint and other things. If you're in Islip give them a call - you may be able to drop them off at other times too.

Open the can and let the paint dry. Then you can toss it into the trash. Alternatively, there should be a local hazardous waste day for your town and you should be able to give it in at the designated day and location.

If your town isn't running a program, you can also get a special sand-like product at the paint store that you just toss into the paint can and it solidifies the paint so you can throw it away in your regular garbage.
