OK, so now that we know the kitten is younger then we thought...
How do I go about getting him litter trained? We did what the vet told us by using the wet cotton ball to his bottom bc he wasnt going at all. Now I need to make sure he goes in the litter box. He seems to have no idea what to do. he is young. 4-5 weeks.

Keep him in a small room and put him in the box a short while (5 minutes) after he eats. He will get the idea soon enough. Good luck.

Re: OK, so now that we know the kitten is younger then we thought...
He is probably just too young to get the concept. And believe it or not, cats have very good instincts about this.
Please try not to get frustrated, as hard as it is. The poor baby was taken from his/her momma wayyyy too soon and is probably very much in need of her still.
But I assure you the baby will get it when the time is right. Kittens have to be stimulated to go (cotton ball in your case or momma licking them). So it's likely just way too soon to expect the kitten to get trained. Gotta give him or her time, much time, b/c of the situation.

I agree- the instinct to go to the bathroom in something they can bury it in is pretty much inborn in cats. He might just be SO young. Make sure you keep putting him in the liter and rubbing his paws in it so he gets the idea that it's there. I got a cat at 8 weeks once and she 100% knew how to use the box when I got her- so he'll catch on soon enough.

I agree. Also when I got our kitties originally they were 7 weeks and just weaned..the kitty is just way too young..give it a few more weeks.

Re: OK, so now that we know the kitten is younger then we thought...
Thanks! I actually went into the store and got fresh step since dh bought some type of organic BS that looked like wood chips. it might have made the difference bc he went 2xs in it. Maybe the cat didnt know what the other stuff was. I also bought a different kind of cat food and it has brown rice. I am hoping it solidifies his poop. Like I said we havent given up on him. We continue to try BUT we would have never taken him so young...never.

Yes! Sometimes they don't take well to the other kind of liter- especially so young. Now that he has gone in it twice he will most likely know to go in there again. He must be SO tiny! Do you have any pictures to post??

His poop is likely loose b/c he may have worms. Most kittens have worms from their moms. Did you see a vet about this, I dont recall? I would not give him any food or anything with a vet's ok, based on his age. Esp something like rice which can constipate him. He needs to see the vet to be dewormed if he has worms (most do). It's only something a vet can take care of.
Is his belly bloated looking? Also a sign of worms. Please if you haven't already, get the baby checked out.
And yes, regular litter is what will work best.

I can't say for sure if they might be contagious to humans, I forget. But you really need to take the kitten in to the vet asap, esp if the kitten is having loose stool. Worms are the #1 reason. Almost ALL kittens and puppies have worms, but it needs to be treated by a vet and a vet only.

No, you have been lied to about everything it seems. Unless you were given vet reports, which could even be fudged, then the woman is clearly lying. Please take this kitten to get checked out. The vet is probably believing if you said that the woman had her checked, but you have been lied to it seems IMO. So now you have to do right by the kitten, for the kitten since this liar did not.

Don't get frustrated. Cats are super smart, he will be littered train in no time. He's just too small right now to grasp it.
I would place our cat in the litter box a few minutes after he finished eating. Than I would take his front paw & lightly drag it through the liter so he understood what he needed to do there.
I showed him once & that was that. He will get it, he just needs some help from his mommy - you

You would be able to see the worms in the stool. Most kittens do - ours did. Nothing that a trip to the vet can't fix though.
This may also be the reason why he's pooping away from his box - he probably can't make it back in time.
Aww the poor baby.
Don't believe anything that lady told you about this furbaby. Clearly none of it is true.

I definitely do not see worms in his poop. he has been somewhat going in the litterbox and he doesnt have the diarhhea anymore. I bought cat food with brown rice so maybe that did the trick. also i got rid of the replacement milk so that could be it too.

Aww..poor lil kitty. I actually got mine at 4/5 weeks also. He was sooo small I also did the cotton ball, then sorta left him in a room w/a litter box that I made out of a lil plastic container filled with kitty litter. here are some pics?

VERY unlikely it would be contagious for humans. Parasites are nearly always species-specific.
Still, it's worth taking the kitty to vet to be dewormed.
