Re: Do you think attorneys are mostly scumbags?
I actually think lawyers are great for the most part. They went to school and worked hard to get their degree and pass the bar. It takes a certain personality to be successful in law, imo...
I do have a problem with the majority of realtors I have met. There have been some scummy ones out there, for sure.

A lot of attorneys generally want to help people.
I think it's unfair to assume things about them. And doesn't this classify as "name-calling?" Even the thread topic is really inflammatory.
If this thread were about cops, it would have been pulled within 3 seconds.

Considering I am an attorney, the intent wasn't inflammatory, merely inquisitive.

Intent means NOTHING on this site.
ETA: It's also generally acceptable in our society to say bad things about lawyers, moreso than most other professions.

Re: Do you think attorneys are mostly scumbags?
I could never think badly about attorneys -- my dad is one, and I have lots of friends who are as well. I guess my first thought, too, when I think of lawyers is Atticus Finch... and, well, that's allll good.

Lots of people work at the US DOJ, most having nothing to do with law. For all we know she could be cleaning the lavatories.
uh, no. she doesn't.

Re: Do you think attorneys are mostly scumbags?
Since I am an attorney and have alot of friends that are attorneys I would have to say NO.
Of course there are always a select few that make the whole profession seem bad but isn't that with every profession. Look at the drs who was re-using needles. I just think like with everything a few spoil it for all

Re: Do you think attorneys are mostly scumbags?
I guess I too must defend my profession. Obviously, I do not think that most attorneys are scumbags. In fact, I have met scum bags of all professions.
Yes, there are scumbag attorneys, but there are also scumbag doctors, RE agents, car salesmen, cops, even teachers - so I hardly think we have the market cornered on that one.
With respect to our billable rates, it is usually only corporate attorneys who charge $700/hr and usually that is at a big firm where the clients are often multinational corporations not your average Joe. For the rate of $700 you get a partner at a firm who has many years of expertise. In addtion, you get a firm who will be at your beck and call all night and all weekend if need be. So while the rate is high, it is not as if we are barely working for that amount - in actuality we work VERY long hours on very little sleep for weeks on end for these Corporations who are certainly not complaining about what we charge.
Besides the market will always set the price - if the price has persisted at that amount it is because it is a service that others are willing to pay for. Yes, there are firms who charge less but there is a reason for that...

I don't know any attorney who has ever called up their assistant "to open a law book and tell them how to proceed." Yikes! I have never even heard of that. Have you?
So then it must never happen, since you've never heard of it. Aren't there people called 'paralegals'?
I actually do this...I'm told of an issue and research laws and give them oral reports and basically how to proceed.
Me too...
I also have my certificate from a local college as a paralegal.

An FM got me thinking (LIZA, this is for YOU ).
I like to think that attorneys still have a good reputation, but every once in a while, it dawns on me, that perhaps 85% of the population really DOES think that attorneys are the evil filth of the world.
Now, really, HONESTLY, what do you think when someone tells you they are an attorney?
Right now (outside of my own), I think they are. The former attorneys I had sucked more than anything I've ever seen and my STBX's attorney should burn in the fiery depths of hell for morally supporting such a POS. I hope there's a judgement day for attorneys who use scumbag tatics to benefit dirtbags, murderers, rapists, child molesters, etc.
I know everyone has to have a job and unfortunately in this country everyone is entitled to due process and a fair trial, but it kills me when let's say a child murderer (or a STBX who is trying to sue for alimony, etc.) is being supported and provided with all sorts of excuses for their behavior by their attorneys. What excuse can one provide that is reasonable for someone who murders/rapes little children??? How can you justify their actions in a morally conscionable way?
Don't mind me, I'm just extremely jaded right now against anything remotely resembling a lawyer. It's like seeing a cop right after you got a ticket. Your 1st reaction to his presence isn't going to be a positive one.
And Beth, I think YOU rock

No. I think they are good people and not so good in all professions.
People need to do their research when hiring one.
