Do you think attorneys are mostly scumbags?

An FM got me thinking (LIZA, this is for YOU Chat Icon).

I like to think that attorneys still have a good reputation, but every once in a while, it dawns on me, that perhaps 85% of the population really DOES think that attorneys are the evil filth of the world.

Now, really, HONESTLY, what do you think when someone tells you they are an attorney?

Re: Do you think attorneys are mostly scumbags?

Mostly I do not think attorneys are scumbags. I do, however, have an issue with "ambulance chasers" and the frivolous "quick-to-sue" lawyers.

And by ambulance chasers, I do not mean all PI attorneys. I mean the ones you actually see hanging around ER waiting rooms handing out business cards to the family members...

This would make a good poll.... Chat Icon External Image Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have to admit that my immediate reaction is negative. That's mainly because the "good" attorneys do their job, and nobody hears about them. It's only the lawyers that do things we don't like that get on TV or newspapers, etc.

I know a few attorneys IRL, and they're all good people, and good attorneys. It really is a shame that a few "bad apples" are spoiling it for the majority. Chat Icon Chat Icon

For the most part, no, I don't think that about attorneys. I have meet some that are but most of the attorneys I have worked with personally and professionally are not scumbags.

I guess I wouldn't judge until I find out what type of law they practice. Chat Icon
I am also not too fond of the "ambulance chasers" myself.

Not at all--I'm married to one! Chat Icon He has MANY attorney friends and associates and as far as I can see, they're the same as anybody else. I like them--or not--based upon their personality, not their profession.

It really depends on the attorney. Just being honest.

This is exactly what I mean about the "bad" lawyers spoiling it for the rest. It's lawyers like this that people remember and talk about.

(On a related side note, which term is preferred? Attorney, or lawyer? Is there a difference? Are the interchangeable?)

Yeah, but isn't this a given for any profession? So why would be a knee-jerk reaction to lawyers?

Re: Do you think attorneys are mostly scumbags?

My sister is one. She put her job in major jeapordy to drop things and come help take care of me through treatment. It was an extremely volatail time for her, workwise, as she was up for partner. She did it anyway.

I have two points with that.
1. Since a family member is in the field, I don't have the same feelings as others.

2. A gentle reminder that MOST lawyers are family people just trying to do their job, in a field they once (and some might still) find interesting.

I think billing out at $500-$700/hour is outrageous...but as far as being scumbags, I think it all comes down to the individual and the line of practice that they're in.

My husband is an attorney and healthcare administrator for a large opthalmic practice. He worked hard to get where he is and has good reputation. He is not a scumbag in any way.

However, years ago I did see a PI attorney. He was a total scumbag - but I'm not saying all PI attorneys are.

Nope, it never enters my mind that attorneys are scumbags. There are so many areas of law and I would venture to say most don't make loads of money. It's just career choice like anybody else.

Normally when someone tells me they're an attorney, the first thing that crosses my mind is the school loans they're probably paying off. Chat Icon (Unless they're in their 40s or older.)

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the #1 reason I hate telling people that my husband is an attorney. He makes a decent salary but with 4 kids , a mortgage, an equity loan (we just toally remodeled our house because it was falling apart), 2 car payments (a minvan and a Honda Accord nontheless), and student loans that are enough to choke a horse, we are extremely far from "rich" (for lack or a better term).

It probably stems from: the fact that attorneys are known to charge exorbitant fees...there definitely are many lawyers out there who are so slimy and unethical that they give a bad name to the entire profession...attorneys are often seen as mercenaries for hire...defense attorneys often have to defend clients who they know are guilty, because the law gives them a right to a trial...many politicians are attorneys and most politicians are seen as untrustworthy...we see attorneys on TV who play the race card, or the gender card, or whatever, so we associate that behavior to the rest of the profession...the list can go on.

Because I worked in a litigation firm. I could tell you stories. I am biased..I could never work for another attorney. I respect the profession, I agree that most work hard to get where they are, but I don't trust most of them. I've been burnt badly.

I guess I see the other side of it - I highly respect defense attorneys. It's not something I could do personally, but without them, many MANY people woud go to jail for crimes they never commited. And, many, MANY people would receive punishments that aren't equitable, given their mitigating circumstances. After all, our constitution DOES guarantee a fair defense. That doesn't mean getting off for a crime you committed, but it does entail a fitting punishment for the crime and the circumstances, and a guarantee that prosecutors follow rules and ethics when charging someone with a crime.

Re: Do you think attorneys are mostly scumbags?

All scumbags. The whole lot of 'em. Chat Icon

I have had 5 jobs since I started law school. One doing general practice, one doign foster care law. Once I became a lawyer I worked in personal injury (we only got referrals, never hung out at an ER of chased an ambulance), doing commercial litigation and now I do insurance defense representing architects and engineers.

Most lawyers are just good people trying to do their jobs. Its so true. Every job I have had has its side and a valid point. And I have been fortunate to work with ethical people who take great pride in what who they are and what they do. And frankly, all we want is to have a good life and provide for our families, like everyone else.
