For someone so passionate about issue, you sure are misinformed about how law offices and legal professionals work.

I actually couldn't care less about attorneys, but this seemed like the most thought-provoking thread on NFR all morning, and since most people just post stuff like, "No, my mother is an attorney and she's not a scumbag"...oh, that's nice, not very informative, but thanks anyway. So I decided to state my opinion. Maybe I am misinformed. Maybe I'm not. Maybe I'm not gonna sit here and type every single bit of knowledge that I have about law offices and legal professionals. My wife works at the US Dept of Justice, so I do have a clue. I myself do not work in every law office in America, so no, I don't know everything that goes on.

As for the paralegals, I did not put down their position. When I said they "did nothing" it was meant sarcastically. I know they do a lot of the dirty work that some attorneys don't have the time to do. I respect their jobs. I originally said that attorneys can call an assistant (i.e. paralegal) to help them on a matter.

Well, you know, my training as an attorney urges me to continue to ask when someone repeatedly provides a weak, nebulous or pretextual answer to my question.

You 'assumed' my reason for posting that was pretextual, when in fact, it was not, as I then went on to make clearer for you.

And I don't think it was nebulous at all, but then again, everyone has a different vantage point.

Lots of people work at the US DOJ, most having nothing to do with law. For all we know she could be cleaning the lavatories.

The fact that your posts on this thread are riddled with sarcasm and snarkiness leads me to believe that your posts are, in fact, pretextual.

But, anyway, this is getting silly and boring.

Off to lunch I go.

As someone who works for corporate lawyers and I have worked for PI litigation lawyers, I can tell you that it really depends on what kind of law you practice, but MAINLY it has to do with ones personality. It has nothing to do with how they're compensated (heck, they work their a$$es off and IMO they deserve it). Just like in any other profession there are scumbags and good people.

Pointing-something out... for what purpose?

From your reaction, you were probably thinking I was trying to start some sort of drama. I am a guy. Guys typically avoid drama...especially when there's women involved.

I don't know any attorney who has ever called up their assistant "to open a law book and tell them how to proceed." Yikes! I have never even heard of that. Have you?

So then it must never happen, since you've never heard of it. Aren't there people called 'paralegals'?

I actually do this...I'm told of an issue and research laws and give them oral reports and basically how to proceed.

When I meet an attorney I think wow you must be a smart guy/girl for going through three years of law school and passing the bar. Good for you.

The reality is "Don't Hate the Player Hate the Game" This is how our legal system has evolved.

In my past experience, any scumbag attorney I ever knew was a scumbag before they even entered law school. Chat Icon

I have A LOT of friends and acquaintances who are attorneys (more than I even would have guessed until I actually sat down and thought about it before responding to this thread).

And I have to say, I totally agree with Chatham-Chick on this.

I also think that different fields of law attract different types of personalities ... the friends who defend children in family court are different than those who are in real estate law and also different than those who are in personal injury ...

how often do you hear people say they hate doctors (besides going to see them) or that doctors are scumbags?

I don't trust doctors.
I think they are puppets under the control of pharaseutical sales reps. I think pharmaseutical sales reps are scumbags.

And if billable rates are going to be a platform, you can't compare hospital/ doctor fees to lawyer fees. The insurance that hospitals and doctors have ot carry often is the reason for the rediculous cost of simple proceedures, like collecting afterbirth.

Re: Do you think attorneys are mostly scumbags?

Absolutely not. I don't see why attorneys would be considered scumbags. I would take an attorney over a criminal anyday. Chat Icon

Honestly, most attorneys are just doing there jobs. If people don't like the cost of working with an attorney, then go to law school and do it yourself. Chat Icon Just like med school, you can leave law school with 100k of debt. That is not something you want to take lightly.

there are "scumbags" in all professions. they are not just limited to the legal field. it is a "personality dysfunction", not a career trait.

No I do not think all lawyers are scumbags. I know more scumbags in education and frankly I find that more disturbing.

My husband is a wonderful attorney. He volunteers at least 6 hours a week and takes on more pro-bono cases than I wish he would!Chat Icon He allows some people to pay him in trade and really helps those who can not afford good legal representation. He's my Atticus Finch and I love him.

Re: Do you think attorneys are mostly scumbags?

Well, I am an attorney and I hold myself to ethical standards that are very high. I do think that most attorneys are not scumbags but there are some that shame the profession. Also, some attorneys are combative people and they might earn a bad reputation just for being that way, but their morals are intact.

I sit on the Grievance committee for the Suffolk County Bar Association and I also take the time to read the legal newspaper articles about attorneys who face being suspended or disbarred. Eventually, true scumbag behavior will bite a lawyer in the ***.
