spinoff of hep b shot at the hospital

for those who denied it why did u deny it?

with ds we denied it bc honestly i didnt know anything about it... I was thinking i was going to get it done when #2 comes along next month. after reading everyones replies on the other post im now having second thoughts

After ds was born and we had to do the 3 series of the hep B I kinda regretted not getting it done at the hospital bc i felt like i had to do an "extra" shot at the peds office.

I know some replies mentioned the nurses discretley said to not get it done at the hospital - just wondering why not start shot #1 of a 3 series shot right away if they have to get it done anyway.

we didn't know anything about it either. When the nurse came in and asked us if we wanted it she was the one who suggested waiting. She did explain why but I was hopped up on meds from my c-section that I really don't remember. Although I will say that when we went to the first ped appointment 2 days after we left the hospital they were annoyed that we didn't get it done at the hospital.

I had planned on not getting it, but once I saw DD there was no way that I wanted her to have it (right away). Here was this little perfect thing that I was blessed with, I didn't want to mess with that right away by pumping her tiny body with chemicals. It was a risk/benefit thing for me, chance of transition very, very low, so worth the wait. She will have it before she goes to school.

i just didnt feel like a minute old baby needed to have a shot. especially a shot that i never had. i figured...let him get over the shock of being born and then he can start hating the doctor in his office. Chat Icon

Re: spinoff of hep b shot at the hospital

crashing here but thought id answer on why we are going to deny the shot

hep b is transmitted through sex, shared needles and blood transfusions -- making the risk of a baby getting it very low.

I think its important to get the vaccine eventually but we are delaying this shot until our LO is older (at least 2-3 years - if it wasnt a mandatory school shot might even delay it longer)

The main reason it is given in the hospital/at birth is just to administer it to all babies in an attempt to irradicate the diease from our population.

Like many others, this shot contains aluminum and id rather limit the amount of aluminum until the LO is older and there body can process it better. Possible side effects from the shot include flu-like symptoms including fever etc can casue alot of fear since its a newborn. If the baby develops these symptoms they dont know for sure if its from the shot so they have to be given a spinal tap etc.

I was one of the ones where the nurse discreetly told us to decline Hep b with my DS....She did tell me why, but it was over 5 years ago and like a PP said, I was a c-section and probaly on pain meds, so my memory as to why is blank Chat Icon

I just followed suit w/ my DD and will with this baby as well....

Re: spinoff of hep b shot at the hospital

my pediatrician at our meet and greet said to have it done at their office. at the hospital the shot comes in a large dose separated and you will never know what batch it came from if there was a reaction. at least at the ped's office they know exactly where it came from.

I denied it because the chances of him getting it were super low. Hes not having sex, hes not doing drugs, and if he needed blood it would come from dh.

ditto! and DH and I did not have Hep B, so chances of DS ever getting it in his first year of life at home with us are slim. If he were in daycare I'd give it before daycare.

I know a lot about Hep B, because DH is a physician and a lot of his patients have severe liver failure from Hep B. I would vaccinate DS the second he is at any minute risk.

we denied it because the pediatrician said they liked to do it at their office and keep all the records with them.

Winthrop actually messed up and put on her chart that she had the vaccine there even though she didn;t...ughh

This !!

In my mind its a STUPID shot! I asked the ped and she said it was just a shot they give to babies because its easier on them but the real % of actual cases is less than 3% and VERY rare. So why give it at all ? Cause the government requires it. Chat Icon You're gonna pump my kid with all sorts of other stuff in such a short time period for the off chances of some rare nearly dead virus, why add one more thats truly the rarest of chances?

I put it bluntly, she's not having sex, if so I have bigger issues, she's not getting a blood transfusion and if she were there are other risks that would probably be invovled and screening for blood etc but again I'd probably have bigger issues, she's not doing drugs other than the ones you (hospital) force onto her and no tattoos .. so back off! Same!!!

My ped also said it is unnecessary because he was not at high risk.

I declined the shot in the hospital and I declined it with the ped. Since he is not in a daycare setting where he may (still not at all likely) come into blood, the chances of him getting Hep B are remote. I decided that my little munchkin did not need any chemicals pumped into his tiny 5lb7oz body when he was bornChat Icon

thank u everyone.. ds got his 1st shot at 2 months old but he was starting daycare a month later..

after reading all ur responses i am going to delay getting this vaccination as long as i can.. he will be home with me - he wont be in daycare and wont be exposed to it. both dh and i are vaccinated bc of our professions anyway...

Re: spinoff of hep b shot at the hospital

I have posted this before but we were told by two neonatologists that this vaccine was a social experiement with a captive population. They wanted to see if they could eradicate it by vaccinating every newborn. I refused it in the hospital and they have still not gotten it...not sure if they ever will

Re: spinoff of hep b shot at the hospital

I didn't know anything about it. The nurses at the hospital knew my ped always refuses to have newborns get the shot so they came to me, told me that info, and gave me the form to sign. DS got it at 2 months. That's when ped gives it.

I denied it because our ped said to because it was part of a combo vaccine they were going to give at 2 months.

Re: spinoff of hep b shot at the hospital

We denied it. I don't care if you want to inject him with glitter - you are not doing it when he isn't even a day old! To me it seems so pointless. We got it at the peds office at his one week visit. Sure he was still brand new - but it sat with me much better.

When I met with our peds office during my interview of them, they specifically told us not to do it at the hospital. They did it at his 1 month appt.

Re: spinoff of hep b shot at the hospital

Said no b/c I don't feel it's wise to put chemicals into a new baby, whose health is yet to be determined. You have to drink alot to have kidneys that function well and excrete the vaccines/chemicals, etc and I felt it was too soon to know what kind of baby and health my baby might have to add a chemical/vaccine into the mix. Esp my DD was a mth early. No way for me.

the exposure was so low, we didnt feel it was necessary. the ped said we can get it done at his office, and the more we read, the more we realized how it was't something he needed. dunno when we will either...
