I agree...if it's spelled this way, it's much less of an issue. IMO

Good Luck, it sux that this has to be a stresser for you.

Good point about the spelling. Cian definitely looks different than Kieran regardless of the pronunciation.

no it wouldn't upset me, but I would be the person in your shoes wondering if it would upset her. I would do it but hesitate a little like you bc you don't want to upset anyone.

I LOVE Cian/Kian. It was our name for a boy if we didn't name him after my DH. We had a girl though.

Thanks. If it's spelled Cian, do you think we'd just end up correcting people our entire life? Most Americans would pronounce it Sigh-Ann, no?

I love the name Cian--I wouldn't mispronounce it, but I married into an Irish family and a lot of kids have Irish names. I also like Kellan. If it were my sister I don't think it would be a big deal, and I agree with the AP that if you use the C spelling it seems even more different. But remember, it's your child, you can name him anything you want Chat Icon

i went through something similair....My nieces name is Zoey and i named my daughter Chloe...We used to at first get it confused..lol..i would say chloe not zoey etc...But now its fine.

and no one cares in the end.

Do what makes you happy.

TOO FUNNY!! One of my best friends wants to name (if she has one) her daughter Chloe. I wanted to name DD Zoey (for a character in one of my favorite books) but because we are so close I chose not to even bring the name up. A few weeks before I was due and 95% set on the name Ryleigh for DD2 the topic came up and my friend thought I was insane for not naming my DD Zoey on the CHANCE of her using Chloe.
In the end...I have a beautiful Zoey (which totally fits her!!) and perhaps in the future I'll have a just as beautiful niece Chloe Chat Icon (RIGHT DIANA!!!

Re: Would this upset you (re: similar sounding baby names)?

I think they're different enough - it wouldn't bother me. Kian/Cian and Keiran are more different than Keelan and Keiran, at least to me. If you're really concerned, maybe ask her if she thinks it would be confusing? She might not think they sound similar either so I wouldn't ask her if she thinks they're too similar - that makes it seem like they do - but I would ask her if it would bother her because it might be confusing at family parties or they may end up with similar nicknames or something like that.

Thanks Ladies. We are also considering Keelan (which is pronounced like Kieran but with an L instead of R).

Another option too: Keegan. Chat Icon Or Kellan.

Re: Would this upset you (re: similar sounding baby names)?

it would bother me. i'm the kind of person who thinks names are special, do play a role on your personality, and make you unique. Picking something so close would make me annoyed.

example 1: DS's name is Benjamin Gabriel. the B is for DHs grandpa, someone he really cared about. (his name started with a B but was not benjamin.) DH's cousin had a boy 6 weeks later and named him lev benjamin. i was very upset he took our name (his logic was it's the middle name so it does not count) what if the kid doesn't like lev? especially in america if he does not want to go with an ethnic name, he would be smart to use his middle name. what will ahppen at family gatherings if he chooses to go by ben? (i'm still not really over it. what made it worse was when i found out if i had a gril they would have went with benjamin for the first name! needless to say, NOT my favorite relatives)

example 2: i have two best friends whom i absolutely love. i consider them my sisters. if we have a second son, we want to name him Jacob. i found out my friend also wants to name her son jacob. this to me means i will not be naming my son jacob. i will leave that name to my friend, because she loves it as well.

lesson i also learned, NOT telling anyone the name for our second child until he/she is born! lol

Usually I say to name your child whatever you like regardless however, in this case the names are SOOOOOOOOO close that I think if it were me I would choose another name. Maybe use the name you like as a middle name instead.

Re: Would this upset you (re: similar sounding baby names)?

since it's your sister, you should really ask her. it's not like it's a friend or distant relative.

for me, they are too close.

We were going to do Cian only bc that's how I saw it spelled originally. I do like it with a K though too. It's a tough name to pronounce at first but easy to say once you pronounce it for someone. I always would say to people it's like Key+in Cian/Kian
I would talk to her if you feel comfortable enough. The last thing you want is tension from her after your son is born. She could never tell you no, bc it's your child and you can name him whatever you want, but I'm sure after hearing her respnse you'll get the hint if she is happy or not.

good luck!

I agree. It's different from having 7 tony's and 16 maria's. It's not as if you are naming your son after someone who passed on. KWIM?

Re: Would this upset you (re: similar sounding baby names)?

Would not bother me in the slightest. But I come from a half Greek family and everyone is named Mike and Maria.

I am also the type that will name my child whatever I want and my whole family and my friends know this. If I like it, then i will use the name.
