Tacky Or Not - Poll ***UPDATED WITH a TID BIT***

**Update: I ask because after this had occurred, I received an e-mail from the Tupperware Bringer and they complained that there were no leftovers and called it "ridiculous." (I was not the host).

Your parents or inlaws (or any super close family members, for that matter) come over for Thanksgiving. Someone else is hosting. Maybe you.

One of them brings a bag filled with different sizes of *EMPTY* Tupperware containers.

You inquire what it's for - you find it odd..it's not like they brought over stuffing or green beans in them, KWIM? They are just empty.

The reply is that the containers are for leftovers. Meaning, they plan on taking leftovers home, and figured they'd bring their own Tupperware to the dinner to fill up.

Note: there was no discussion of this prior to the dinner, and there it is likely that there will be no leftovers even left.

Discuss.

We went to MIL for thanksgiving and we always bring container for leftover. This year MIL even bought cheap container so people can take the leftover home. I dont find it tacky but this is the way our family role lol

Re: Tacky Or Not - Poll

I hate the word tacky. However, I feel that this is the perfect opportunity to use it. Tacky and presumptuous! Just awful. It's one thing for the host to send you home with food, but to bring your own containers and expect them to be filled... ugh Chat Icon that's almost like stealing, in a way. The person who cooks and hosts should get to enjoy all the leftovers unless they OFFER to send the guests home with food.

Re: Tacky Or Not - Poll

Think it depends on what fam member did it... If I wasnt too fond of them, i'd consider it rude, tacky, etc... If it was someone im really close with, like my parents, i wouldnt think twice about it .... sounds hypocritical, but its the truth! I think I would prefer that people bring over their own tpperware bc I feel like when Ive given out mine, I've never got it back Chat Icon

I think it's tacky to not have brought anything for the meal.

The containers isn't so odd to me, in our family we usually do that.

Okay if my parents came over to ME hosting Thanksgiving then no... not tacky they are my parents and if they want leftovers, cool.

If my in laws came over and I was hosting Thanksgiving then no, not tacky... who doesn't want yummy leftovers.

If my parents were invited to my in laws or my in laws were invited to my parents and either or brought the tupperware then yes... tacky. IDK why but that's just my opinion

Re: Tacky Or Not - Poll

I've never done it but I think it depends on the family member.

Maybe the family always sends people home with leftovers-in which case I guess it's actually helpful?

I don't think I would ever be so presumptuous except with my own momChat Icon

welcome to my life

every.single.weekend.

My MIL hates to cook. We love to cook and do so very often when they visit. My FIL goes home well fed with lefteovers for the next few days. My MIL and FIL surely do appreciate it.

Not tacky is my vote. Chat Icon

Actually, I LOVE that idea. There are ALWAYS leftovers on holidays, and I HATE giving away my tupperware.......even if I know I'll get it back.

I think it would be fine if you discussed it before hand. To do it out of the blue is pretty tacky though.

I think that totally makes sense. Every holiday there is waaaay too much food, waaay too many left overs. The person hosting usually doesn't want all of the left overs. This way you don't have to worry about getting containers back etc. Great idea!!

Re: Tacky Or Not - Poll

Whenever my sister or my mom host they DEMAND we bring our own Tupperware for leftovers... Actually, i think in my immediate family it is considered rude NOT to bring their own Tupperware and expect the host to provide you with their own, because it's a given that you are leaving with leftovers.

However, it totally depends on a particular family... and as I just saw the note on the bottom , in that case it is completely tacky. Chat Icon

Re: Tacky Or Not - Poll

yes it does sound really tacky but i do thanksgiving and dh and i are not really into leftovers,
so we always offer up leftover and try to get rid of as mush as possible, so now i have no more storage containers because they were all given out to his mother with the leftovers, so actually it wold be good if she brought her own containers

so my answer is i think it really depends on the family and what is normal for your family

Yes, my MIL is the same and tells us to come with Tupperware. She also travels a lot and so isn't even around to have them, so she likes us to have them.

BUT, if there had been no prior discussion, and someone randomly showed up with empty Tupperware, I would find that super tacky!

Re: Tacky Or Not - Poll

Depends on the relationship you are talking about. I am close with anyone I invite over for dinner, or whose homes I would be invited over for Thanksgiving so I do not find it tacky in the case of "family" (in-laws, including SIL/BIL, or my parents) doing this.

We are all close, do not feel silly or like we have to be proper/etiquette with every little thing during holidays, and most of all we are all PRACTICAL when it comes to food and leftovers!! There is ALWAYS too much food during the holidays and most people want to give at least some of it away. Based on history I know it would be okay to do this. However, I have never brought my own containers (more because I don't think of it!), leftovers are provided in freezer bags or something else they are fine giving away.

On the other hand, if I was invited to someone else's house (someone that I am not as close with) for dinner or a holiday I would not bring tupperware, and I may find it presumptious if they brought it to my house.

Unless agreed upon in advance, or it's something that is ordinarily "done," then yeah, that's kinda tacky.

Soooo tacky. Granted, if I were hosting, I'd definitely be sending people home with leftovers, but to assume like that! Chat Icon

Re: Tacky Or Not - Poll

Makes sense in that if there were leftovers, the host wouldn't be handing out her Tupperware.

BUT

I would never do it, no one I know would ever do it, and I would think its weird if someone made it known that they were bringing their own Tupperware for leftovers.

BUT

It in no way impacts me. I would think its odd, shrug it off, and call it a day.

I usually buy the containers for people to take home food.

I don't think it's tacky if you know that's how it goes.

I say tacky only because they didn't bring stuff.

If you want to leave with leftovers I feel you should be contributing to the meal.

Re: Tacky Or Not - Poll

Since it's family -- I really don't understand why it's tacky. Chat Icon

How many times do leftovers just get wasted because no one wants to bother eating them for 3 or 4 days straight?

IMHO - we can be so damn wasteful with food, where others out there would wish to just have a 1/4 plate of what we toss in the garbage -- so if someone wants to bring stuff home and NOT waste it....why is that tacky?

My family would probably be happy if someone took leftovers -- heck my mom is shoving leftovers in my siblings faces at the end of the meal, so if someone has their own containers, I say GREAT.
