Which areas for Renting in Queens?
Hi Ladies..
Can you recommend any good areas/neighborhoods in Queens to live in (specifically rent)?
We currently live in Glendale in a 1 bedroom but we have a baby on the way and are looking for a 2 bedroom. While I dont hate Glendale, if any of you know the area its torture for parking.
Also, I prefer a two family house or SMALL apt. building... NOT a big one like a live in now (16 units). Ideally I would like a residential area.
One last thing (sorry)... it needs to be somewhat close to transportation (subway/bus) because my husband has to get to downtown brooklyn everyday.
ETA: Our budget is $1400 (max) including bills. I know, its tight!

All three are residential, have some apt buildings and close to transportation.
Forest Hill is also great, but may not be as residential as you would like unless you live in the gardens.
Have you considered Brooklyn since your Dh works there?

We actually have considered Brooklyn. My husband is looking into an area called Bensonhurst. Do you know anything about that area, lol?
Though Im a little weary because we wont know anyone there, we would be away from the only family we have which live in Bayside. I would LOVE to live in Bayside (my mom lives there) but unfortunately we cant afford the rent there 
I think Forest Hills would be a great place to look, Thank you!!

Long Island City
Bensonhurst is very Italian. That's pretty much all I know about it.
A friend of mine used to live in Brooklyn Heights. That's a really up and coming area. Lots of great restaurants.

I live in Bayside - problem is that the OP budget won't work in Bayside. The commute to downtown Brooklyn would take forever, since we are far from the Flushing Main Street 7 train. Other option is express bus or RR to the city, then transfer to subway.
Anyplace in Queens suck$ for parking.
I grew up in Astoria (upper Ditmars) it's a good area. Parts of LIC are good too.

Good point! I didn't notice the downtown bklyn part of the post. My apologies! I lived there for 5 years and loved it so I recommend it to everyone, LOL!
It's a good commute into Manhattan, not Brooklyn.

I just moved to Glendale from Forest Hills and honestly, where I moved to is way more residential then anywhere in Forest Hills (other then the gardens). If you think parking in Glendale is bad, definitely cross Forest Hills off of your list. That and you won't find a one bedroom for under $1400 there. With that price range I would look into Ridgewood, Queens which has good bus and subway routes to Brooklyn and is still residential. You could probably find an apt. in a 2 family for that price.

Was just going to post that. I don't live in Queens but I work there. I have to visit different families at times and when I get a Forest Hills case I dread it b/c I know I have to leave extra early b/c I'll be circling for parking for over a half hour!

Woodside and Sunnyside may get you something with all of your criteria; they are both "bustling" neighborhoods but you could get a 2br in a 2 or 3 family house more than likely. Both close to transportation too.
I'm currently in Astoria and have definitely seen 2brs for 1400 but they will tend to be in larger apt. buildings, but you could get lucky!!!
Definitely worth visiting if you're not familiar with the area, Astoria has lots of different "sections" within the neighborhood, all are well-served with transportation and shopping/dining/etc.
However parking is a true and total biitch over here, so I'd highly recommend looking for a garage rental or parking space!!!!!

I truly wish we could afford to rent in Bayside, because its nice and near my family BUT as one of the posters mentioned $1400 wont get me anything there
I will keep looking...maybe woodside, Long Island City, Howard Beach. Maybe even Brooklyn itself.

If you want residential and tons of parking - Auburndale/Broadway LIRR stops by Bowne Park.

I lived for several years in Sunnyside and Maspeth. Loved Sunnyside for convenience to Manhattan (6 stops to Grand Central and lots of buses) and stores, restaurants etc. Had a great 2 bedroom apt for 1400 that I lived in for 5 years. It was a building with 6 units. Parking was horrific though.
Parking in Maspeth was easy peasy. Always got a spot on my block or late at night, a block over. Also, very walkable. similar to Glendale since it is more residential than say, Sunnyside, woodside. Apts are cheaper than Sunnyside, had a cute 1 bedroom for under 1000 in a 2 family home. Only issue is convenience to the subway, I had to take a bus to the train but it wasn't too bad.

It is definitely quieter and more residential because it's mostly one family homes. You should pick up a copy of the Times Newsweekly, it comes out every Thursday. They list tons of apartments in the surrounding area and even garage spaces for rent.

I just wanted to add that most of the areas mentioned here will $uck for parking. It's Queens and Brooklyn. You're lucky if you have a one car garage. I don't know that much about Bayside but my brother owns a coop there and parking suck$ by him. Also, for the budget you mentioned, I wouldn't bother with Long Island City or any desirable part of Brooklyn. What is it that you don't like about Glendale? I know a lot of neighborhoods so maybe I can help you narrow down a good fit.

Yea I love the area near Atlas park so much more! I will definitely pick up that paper, im so tired of looking in craigslist and such.

Not true. 2 of my relatives rent in Middle Village, one is just moving this month into a one bed in a condo building for $1200 a month. You wouldn't pay near $1400 for a one bedroom anywhere in MV. You could definitely get a 2 bedroom for that price. I personally don't think parking is great in Middle Village but I guess that depends on what you are looking for. I know a great realtor at Tscherne in Middle Village if you are interested. You can FM me if you want his info.
