Nicer areas of brooklyn and queens
Dh and I are casually considering (as in- it will probably NEVER happen) moving to one of the boroughs to be closer to his future job (if and when he gets into the FDNY). Of course- this will mean me commuting to Deer Park every day
Anyway- I know little to nothing about the area- so I wouldn't even know where to begin looking.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks!

Re: Nicer areas of brooklyn and queens
would you be looking for a house or a condo/coop?
if a house, I'd stick to queens. astoria, forest hills, maspeth, kew gardens, even elmhurst and jackson heights, sunnyside, woodside...
if you'd consider apt living...there are tons of places in brooklyn. if you wanted a house in brooklyn for less than $700k, if it exists in a "nice" area, you'd have to be far into brooklyn...marine park, mill basin, gravesend...then it doesn't even pay b/c your so far away from things (at least IMO)

We would be looking to rent, so an apartment would be best. We would only be staying for a few years.

Why not move to the border of Nassau and Queens?

Re: Nicer areas of brooklyn and queens
I live in Bay Terrace- to me it's the best of both worlds
it's urban and suburban at the same time
Bayside is also really nice- it's a young vibe IMO with all the bars and resturants
we really like it here- there are alot of options for rentals

I agree..Bayside is the best of both worlds. Easy jump to all roads out East for you and easy commute to NYC.

Forest Hills Bayside Whitestone Douglaston Little Neck
Middle Village & Maspeth - but the commute kinda stinks unless you live right near the train. I used to live in Ridgewood and it was a PITA.

Eastern Queens: Little Neck Douglaston Whitestone Bayside North Flushing
Western Queens: Middle Village Maspeth Upper Glendale Forest Hills
Brooklyn: Greenpoint Williamsburg you don't want to be too far south or west in Brooklyn - you'll never get to work with all the traffic, LOL

Re: Nicer areas of brooklyn and queens
If you work in Deer Park, Brooklyn is not a good option because driving would be your only method of commuting and that is not ideal. But, I grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and it is a great area.

doesn't the LIRR go to Deer Park?
the Flatbush Hub is very close to some great areas in Brooklyn with apt to buy and to rent.

I totally forgot about the Flatbush hub. In that case, Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights are great areas.

Re: Nicer areas of brooklyn and queens
I live in Howard Beach, its a great neighborhood, but you don't have many options for commuting (only the A train, and the Belt Parkway).
I agree with most of the suggestions above, esp. Bayside, Forest Hills, & Middle Village.

Re: Nicer areas of brooklyn and queens
Park Slope is soooo cute. We tried to buy there and it was so expensive but maybe to rent. Also try brooklyn heights although its a bit older crowd and not the best restaurants, it is a lot closer to the city though

Re: Nicer areas of brooklyn and queens
I second the pp who wrote that some parts of Brooklyn would not be such a good choice, like Bay Ridge, even if you took the train. I live in Bay Ridge and while I recommend it to many people, I would not recommend it for someone that had to get to DP everyday.
Driving 2 hours. Train, takes about the same, because it takes a half hour to get to Atlantic Avenue from Bay Ridge to get on the LIRR.
Queens sounds like such a better option and its beautiful!!
