Commute to NYC in 30-35 mins?
My husband and I currently live and work in NYC and are looking for houses in lower Westchester and also western Nassau..we would like to keep our train time to about 30-35 minutes...any suggestions for nice towns in Queens / western Nassau where you could find a decent detached home for 600K? We were thinking of Great Neck or Rockville Center...but we don't know Nassau too well and nothing about the schools.
Thanks!!

Bayside or Little Neck. Both in Queens. You could most likely find something in the low 600s (we've been looking too and if the houses are prices competitively in those areas they are gone FAST). Bayside has the number 1 school district in NYC, plus you're paying Queens taxes. Very residential/LI feel to the area. Good luck!

I would also check out North Flushing/Auburndale (around John Bowne Park). They are on Port Washington line. Homes are in the 600-800K range (and more) for detached, but taxes are super low!
We lived there and we absolutely loved it.

We are looking in Great Neck, and unless ur going to buy an apt there, its rare to find a home in the 600k range I wish, we'd be there already, the prices in GN start around 800K

Re: Commute to NYC in 30-35 mins?
my friend is putting her house on the market in white plains to move to LI but I know her house is a 35 min commute to NYC.
It's 3 bedroom, 1 1/2 baths, full finished basement. Detatched garage, small yard.
They just redid roof and windows and the place has forced hot air/central AC.
Kitchen just redone last year.. hardwood floors thru out.
When she puts on MLS I can send you the link if you'd be interested..

Those are nice areas too! Should have mentioned that DH is from Douglaston and his parents live there, so we don't want to be *too* close to them...haha...
I had a feeling Great Neck would be too expensive...we haven't really started looking yet.

That would be great, thanks! DH wants to stay lower (Tuckahoe) but I don't think White Plains is out of the question yet!

I was going to say this. Your price range is a bit too low for there.

Yes, I would recommend either as well. I would add Garden City too, although you would have to be patient and wait for something in that price range.

Bayside, Little Neck or Douglaston - less than 30mins on the LIRR.

I'm in Bellmore and we're only 40 mins! I go from the Merrick station. Both are in your price range.

Re: Commute to NYC in 30-35 mins?
We live in Carle Place and my commute into NYC is about 35-40 min on the LIRR. I grew up in CP and after getting married, DH and I bought a house here. I absolute love the town/community and it is centrally located in Nassau so we can easily get to both Queens and Suffolk. HTH!

check out lynbrook
ITA Lynbrook is great, great schools, great town. You can definately find a house in that range, also try East Rockaway or Hewlett with Lynbrook schools. The train ride is 30-35 minutes to Penn.

Re: Commute to NYC in 30-35 mins?
Just a tip. When calculating travel time, make sure you do door to door. Just because the LIRR ride is 40 minutes, doesn't mean your commute time will be that. Take into consideration driving to train station, parking, walking to work, or taking the E train, etc. It adds up.

Whitestone too--but I have to be honest and say you will be hard pressed to find a detached home for 600K that doesn't need work
Floral Park queens (or LI) might be a better bet
