Re: Autism and ultrasounds...

When I was talking to my ped about the MMR shot for my son, he mentioned that people believe there may be a link...I haven't looked into it, so I really can't say what I believe.

Re: Autism and ultrasounds...

Through my research I have read that some people believe ultrasounds may be correlated with autism, but from what I read there is no studies to prove this. I think a lot of people want to blame it on something and since the rise of autism each year starting from the 80's or so, they are trying to figure out what are we doing "differently" now than years ago, so that is some people's theory. However I don't really believe this because I think it has a lot to do with genetics due to the fact that many siblings of children with autism may also have a disability. Who really even knows anymore. I work with children with autism so this is on my mind also, but I know people who have gotten many ultrasounds due to medical reasons and their kids are fine. So I wouldn't worry too much.

Re: Autism and ultrasounds...

I am not sure but my Ob.Gyn does. She really limited all my ultrasounds and I barely had anything but the necessary ones. I think I had like two or three the whole pregnancy.

I am really not so sure about whether there is a link or not. I am also considered advanced maternal age so not sure if that was a factor or not either.

It could be, but at this point it really could be anything. I have been thinking for awhile it might have to due to advanced Maternal age as well.

Re: Autism and ultrasounds...

I think it is something to consider, but since there is no evidence of a connection I wouldn't worry about it too much. However, as long as you are healthy, I would limit any extra ultrasounds.

My OB was a little "ultrasound happy" with DS and I had 5 ultrasounds with my pregnancy -- all within the first 20 weeks. DS shows no signs of autism (he's 23 months). With this pregnancy I am starting out with midwives and will only have 2 ultrasounds unless there are problems.

Re: Autism and ultrasounds...

I have heard this too. i don't know if it is true, but my doc has been limiting them as well. I had a few early on b/c they thought there was a problem, but since then, my last one was at 9 weeks and my next one will be at 20 weeks. After that, I believe that there will only be one more in the third tri.

Re: Autism and ultrasounds...

My Inlaws seem to think there is a link.

Esp because back in the days when sonos werent around or that women werent getting that many. Because of that, Autism wasnt around much then..so hence, LINK.

Who knows.

I don't believe it, I think theres more of a link with the vaccinations and autism more than anything else

Re: Autism and ultrasounds...

Since nobody knows for sure what triggers autism, there COULD be a link. There is no way, as of today, to disprove it. I have no interest in any more sonos than is absolutely medically necessary, for this very reason. I especially have no interest in 3D/4D sonos for this reason.

I'm also open to the possibility that vaccines are to blame. I admit my 2 1/2 yr old DS is behind on several shots that I'm withholding till he is 3. He had a speech delay and I wanted to make sure he was past the age where signs of autism first manifest themselves before giving him these shots. That way, whatever happened I would not have to spend the rest of my life wondering if the shots did it to him. He ended up being just fine, his speech totally caught up with therapy, so I feel comfortable with him catching up on shots later. But why take chances, if there's even a possibility that vaccines, excessive sonos, etc could cause this disability?

And re: people who say "Well I had 10 sonos and my child is fine"... that's good news for the parent who said it, but overall meaningless because a single outcome does not prove nor disprove a theory.
