Nicole Kidman could soon be back in New York, playing Vanity Fair style maven Amy Fine Collins.

Collins is the elegant arbiter who puts together the magazine's fiercely competitive annual best-dressed list. Current honorees include David and Victoria Beckham, Ivanka Trump, Renée Zellweger and Lenny Kravitz.

But Kidman's interest is in the screen version of her memoir, "The God of Driving: How I Overcame Fear and Put Myself in the Driver's Seat With the Help of a Good and Mysterious Man."

The book is about learning to drive as an adult, and the relationship she developed with her Turkish instructor, Attila.

While one source indicated the deal had been done, the official word from Kidman's rep is that the project is still being considered.

"The book was sent over for her to review," a spokeswoman told us. "She is still reviewing it. She hasn't attached her name to anything as of now."

Fashion is an emotional experience for Gwen Stefani.

"Before Gwen went out on stage at her L.A.M.B. fashion show, she was sobbing uncontrollably backstage," says a source. "When asked what was wrong, she just said she was so overwhelmed. She talked about how she used to sew with her mother, and now [that] she has a baby, fashion is what matters to her."

Aww!

Stefani and her husband, Gavin Rossdale, along with some of his bandmates, later retired to the screening room of the Gramercy Park Hotel to watch Roger Federer play in the U.S. Open.

A couple of weeks ago there was a story that Salma Hayek was planning a triple wedding to take place in three different cities that would put Eva Longoria’s over-the-top nuptuals to shame. The heavily pregnant Mexican actress was going to hold ceremonies in her hometown of Mexico, in Paris where her fiance, Francois-Henri Pinault, is from, and in LA.

All that might be for show, because there are small clues Salma is dropping that suggest she’s already married.

On a visit to tony L.A. department store Fred Segal on August 15… when it was time to pay for her purchases, Salma plopped down a Visa card issued to Salma Hayek-Punault. Ten days later, during the baby shower at ther Hollywood Hills home, the Oscar nominee kept calling Francois-Henri, who was there, her “husband.”

A civil ceremony makes sense, says an insider, explaining, “For Salma, the thought of having a baby out of wedlock was unacceptable.”

ROSIE O'Donnell isn't done with The Donald. Page Six has obtained pages from her new book, "Celebrity Detox," hitting shelves Oct. 2, in which she calls Donald Trump "a torn scarecrow" and "a slug."

O'Donnell writes about the Tara Connor scandal - in which Miss USA was caught drinking underage and tested positive for cocaine but was allowed to enter rehab and retain her title - "It is Trump's falseness that angers me more than anything . . . I spoke my mind. People found it funny.

"I honestly did not anticipate the malice of his response . . . I assumed Donald believed he had money. I did not assume Donald believed he was money. But apparently he does . . . The stuffing of his self spilled out - think of a torn scarecrow, only instead of hay, it's crisp $100 bills blowing through the cornfields."

Trump reminded O'Donnell of "garden slugs . . . I could write one small comment on my blog, and Donald would predictably distend, flowing forth with a torrent of insults . . . Then he'd appear on some talk show looking wrinkled, old and empty, with a Jell-O orange combover.

"I did not anticipate that he would be cruel enough to do what he did to Barbara [Walters - whom he called a liar]. She should have been left alone."

Trump, who has his own tome, "Think Big and Kick ***," coming out next month, isn't taking any of this lying down.

"I devote some time to Rosie in my book," Trump said. "As you know, she said I went bankrupt and ABC apologized. Rosie lies. I got angry because I never went bankrupt. I'm worth $8 billion today. She never said that. She writes false stuff . . . Rosie is a loser, a very sad case - unattractive both inside and out. I'll make a little wager my book sells a lot more than hers."

Cindi Berger, O'Donnell's rep, said, "I find it hard to believe you got a copy of this book as there were no galleys even produced. The pub date is Oct. 2." All proceeds of O'Donnell's tome go to her charity, Broadway Kids.

A rep for ABC could not be reached for comment, but someone who read the book said, "This is the work of a deeply disturbed woman, page after page of insane ramblings. Ultimately, it's sad and pathetic."

Walters has her own book, a memoir, coming out in May, but an ABC insider said, "She most likely won't even deal with Rosie. This book will be about her legacy."

STEPHEN Dorff is still at it. Earlier this summer, the lady-loving actor - who was last seen squabbling with Jeremy Piven on the line for the loo at Bungalow 8 - was rebuffed at a party in Malibu. Approaching one beauty, "He said, 'Hey,' in this smarmy way and asked her when they were going to go out," said an eavesdropper. "She told him, 'Likely never,' and he turned completely red and asked, 'Why not?' " When the woman responded that Dorff was not her type, he responded, "What? Really good-looking is not your type?" He then walked away. "It was hysterical," the source related. "I felt really bad for him."

JULIA Ormond and her husband of eight years are splitting. A source tells Page Six the British actress, 42, most recently seen in the Lindsay Lohan bomb "I Know Who Killed Me," is separating from political activist Jon Rubin. "They're in the process," our insider said. The couple has a 3-year-old daughter, Sophie. Calls and e-mails to Ormond's rep were not returned. Her first marriage to Rory Edwards ended in divorce in 1994.

Testosterone-charged rapper 50 Cent almost caused an incident on the red carpet of Fashion Rocks before he even got through the door.

We watched him flip out as Tyra Banks' handler inadvertently nudged him.

"What the [bleep] is wrong with you? How you gonna bump me?" he fumed at the terrified-looking man.

Fortunately, other celebs were a little nicer.

"I'm so upset — I can't go to the MTV Video Music Awards," rumored 50 Cent love interest Ciara told us. "I had a date that was already booked before the VMAs were booked, and the promoter is not budging."

A beaming Mya said: "I just opened up for Prince in London; I was in a trance the whole time."

Jennifer Lopez (sans Marc Anthony) looked trim and fantastic, disproving rumors in recent weeks that she was toward the end of her first trimester with twins.

Nicole Richie, however, was showing off her baby bump as she mingled on the red carpet with the likes of Kimora Lee Simmons, Josh Groban and scores of others.

Fergie said she was happy to see some of New York Fashion Week. "But no more shows for me; I'm going to Jerusalem tomorrow to perform," she told us.

"I'm a hip-hop kid, I'm haute couture and 'hood," model Veronica Webbjoked.

We asked Ashanti what she thought was her personal style.

"I describe my look as classy, not trashy," she said.
