A romantic vacation in Hawaii ended in tears for Denise Richards.
Months after the end of her relationship with Richie Sambora, a pal of the actress tells us she had been expecting him to propose on the island.
Instead, he broke up with her.
"She was devastated," says the source, "and kept up appearances as if they were still together."
That may explain why news of the February split took three months to hit the media.
Richards talked about their then-year-old relationship in an interview that ran in the June issue of Glamour magazine.
"Recently we went to Hawaii and people came up to us and said, 'We're so happy for the two of you,'" she said.
"So people are starting to accept the relationship, realizing it's not just a fling."
Richards' spokeswoman denies she was anticipating a proposal during the vacation; a Bon Jovi band rep said, "No comment."

MICHAEL Jackson is the customer from hell, according to staffers at the Inn at Perry Cabin in St. Michael's, Md., where he stayed with his entourage last week. "They were on a completely different time zone," a server at the fancy waterfront inn where "The Wedding Crashers" was filmed told The Post's Braden Keil. "We were getting calls at 4 a.m. from Jackson himself asking for all kinds of things, including chicken fingers and other types of kids food." But it wasn't all bad. "He even called and blessed the manager."

ADD Ivanka Trump's name to the growing list of candidates to replace Rosie O'Donnell and Star Jones on "The View." The National Enquirer reports that Barbara Walters wants to hire the "hottie with brains" to stick it to Paris Hilton and her parents for their shabby treatment of her when they were trying to sell the Paris post-prison interview. But our sources say Walters is still sore at Donald Trump for calling her a liar during his feud with O'Donnell and will never hire a Trump. "It ain't gonna happen," said one insider. Still in the running: Gale King, Whoopi Goldberg, Kathy Griffin and another longshot, Mario Cantone.

CRINGE frontman John Cusimano may not be spending every day with his wife of almost two years, Rachael Ray, for much longer. Insiders say Ray and Cusimano are "going through a messy breakup." A source close to the couple told Page Six, "Her mother is in town from Lake George to help Rachael find an apartment." Rumors of their split have been circulating ever since the National Enquirer reported last November that Cusimano paid Jeaninne Walz up to $500 a session to spit on him and rub her feet on his face in 2000, before he met Ray. Rumors are also circulating that Rachael "has been flirting" with Colby Donaldson, the ex-"Survivor" cast member who joined the "Rachael Ray" show in February, on and off the set. But Ray's rep, Charlie Dougiello, told us, "Rachael and John are happier than ever and have been in the Hamptons since Tuesday enjoying the holiday week with friends. Rachael's mom, Elsa, is upstate at the family cabin. There is no truth to reports they are about to get divorced."
