My point, which you missed, is that people take out their anger on a politician who has NOTHING TO DO WITH A DEADLY VIRUS infecting our state. The vitriol is toxic. I'm sick of the blame and complaining. Cuomo has no control over this virus. He is absolutely right to close the schools.
Then the next step up is conspiracy theorists believing this virus was released intentionally or otherwise from a lab in china. It falls into that vein.
And I was talking to people who said they want to MOVE. I simply said go ahead and MOVE.

I am crying and I know he won't open them in the fall either. I am looking for rental properties in a southern state.
NC closed schools beginning March 16 and they are closed for the rest of the school year

It's not his fault. But the fact that he is the only governor who has not given us one ounce of any kind of hope, is terrible. All he keeps saying is downstate NY will not open anytime soon. Ok- does that mean June, August, 2036? No one is asking for an exact date. But a general timeline would be nice. Instead he tells us over and over and over about the mask sent from Kansas, that nothing else matters except not getting this virus, and that once we reopen, cases will surge. We heard you the first 700 times.
The fact is, I am genuinely concerned for the future of downstate NY. I worry that we will be the only ones in the world still on strict lock down through the holidays. I don't think some people realize that once this virus subsides, we will be left with a horrific problem that could affect generations. Children not receiving the proper education, people unable to work, all of Manhattan in an economic apocalypse. Children are STARVING. There could be another great depression. But, hey, you didn't get Covid, right? What's a little starvation?

Schools Closed in NY
The problem here is that people are losing their jobs left and right and those who ARE able to work, in many cases cannot because they have no one to care for their children. I am drowning like nobody's business but I'm not going to go hungry. Other people are. People who make lower wages are much more likely to HAVE to go to work, in jobs that are often unsafe (that's a whole other issue). What do they do with their kids? I am honestly asking. I think it's all well and good to say the schools are unsafe, etc but the reality is, for many kids, they are the safer option. School IS the safer option when the alternative is being left alone, or with abusive caregivers or starving because their parents can't work to put food on the table or homeless because they can't afford rent.
I don't understand how people don't see that. I just can't fathom it.

Holy cow the flat out panic on this post. I have been around much lately but this is crazy. So what N.Y. closed schools. Do people realize what happened in our area. Count yourselves lucky if you didn’t have anyone die. I had multiple. So if I have to have my son stay home so be it.
And believe me I’m still going to stores, riding my bike and running but sending the 1000+ kids and staff back into my sons elementary school would be insane.

As of now, the entire state is on the same plan regardless of the number of cases. No plan to reopen whatsoever. He did allow for elective surgeries in my area since hospitals were actually laying people off in my area.

I think they are going to have open some sort of day care situation. They are doing it now with essential workers. I also think that communities need to step up and start helping each other out. When we were younger no one could afford camp and our parents worked. We stayed home if we were teens and neighbors who were home helped watch the kids. I would gladly watch some neighborhood kids if it came to that.

Because if we can make 19 million people lose everything to "save just one life" then having all those abandoned, abused, starving, homeless kids will be worth it. Cuomo says that so it must be true and wonderful.

They are already starting to open up the state.
This psychopath will keep us locked up until next June.
Those "in the know" that work in education have candidly said that they already know that a normal September opening is off the table. Cuomo won't tell us that now because it will create panic. But at best, if we do go back, it will still be mostly online with minimal in-person learning with staggered schedules, a lot less kids in the building during any given time period, masks, and no specials/extracurricular activities at all.

For everyone who plans on moving to a state that is open... These states that are all opening. Do you think they will be immune to this virus? The virus doesn't know borders. These states don't have vaccines. I hope I'm wrong but I can't foresee them STAYING open once their numbers skyrocket.
I know this school situation is not ideal. Trust me. I know !!!

The fact is that no hero doctor or essential worker on the front lines should be exposed to one germ from one person who demands rights without responsibilities. The ad hominem attacks on posters show people's inabilities to deal with reality without attacking people who didn't choose to live through this and may be far less comfortable than they are. It's not about any of us, and anyone who attacks others can't see past their own interests. When people start with the whole "You're only saying that because YOU..." it reveals that their own opinions are all about THEIR own situations and no one else's.
If I were a doctor, I would be furious. Because people fatigued from doing their part to contain this but everyone demands world class healthcare when they and their family gets sick.
None of us likes this. But many of us resent the misdirected vitriol.

For everyone who plans on moving to a state that is open... These states that are all opening. Do you think they will be immune to this virus? The virus doesn't know borders. These states don't have vaccines. I hope I'm wrong but I can't foresee them STAYING open once their numbers skyrocket.
I know this school situation is not ideal. Trust me. I know !!!
The 1918 pandemic taught us that and more. So many millions of people. But some will not be guided by history. And this thing will rip through again and again until we learn. And we will all be worse off for it.
To the previous poster who lost people, I am so sorry for your loss.

Everyone says they want a date, they want a date when we'll be 'back'. Then when we're not ready on that date, everyone will complain that the wrong date was given and there was lying. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
He's given all the details, you should be able to figure it out.
May 15 some counties upstate will goto Phase 1. You cant goto Phase 2 until 2 weeks passes in Phase 1. So upstate will go phase one May 15 at the earliest, then he will re-evaulate on June 1. He's not going to open downstate up for phase 1 until at least June 1. Assuming he does this, 2 weeks in Phase 1 and maybe Phase 2 on June 15. So it is basically July 1st at the earliest.

The whole problem is there was two choices. Either ignore the problem and hope that we weather the storm or shut down and try to protect from the storm. No matter what Cuomo chose he would be screwed. If he did nothing then we would have a ton more people who would have died and people would have been screaming he didn't do enough. He closed down trying to save lives and now people are losing their jobs and the economy is tanking. There is no quick open because once we open and if people start dying again, there will be an outrage. It's a complete catch 22. It is just unfortunate that we live in a state where we have such a dense population and got hit hard by the virus. Most parts of the country are not anywhere near the crisis we are in so comparing them opening to us is really irrelevant. I don't believe there is a right or wrong in this scenario but a choice had to be made.

I am guessing that either you or a close loved one is a health care worker. My best friend of 32 years is a physician at a LI hospital. But even she is capable of empathy for people who are struggling with the quarantine, and even she, a front line worker, acknowledges that isolation is painful and that there are unintended consequences to the extended stay at home orders that are real. It doesn’t lessen her resolve, or change her mind about what she knows is best, but it does make her a lot more empathetic to people’s struggles. For some reason, you are determined to trivialize others’ experiences. You don’t care about anyone else’s family, but expect us all to care about yours.
