When I was a kid, my mom was able to stay at home and watch me and my five siblings. Now, the harsh reality is some families NEED two incomes to survive. If they need to take the day off from work then it is best to arrange as early as possible.

I think people have realized how dangerous it is to wait until the snow is coming down to close schools etc, and have to get kids home. This storm is predicted to pack a major wallop. So far this winter the forecasters have been right on target, and there is no reason to endanger children.

You also have to take the teachers (especially HS) into account. Some have long commutes. I know I once got the call right before I was leaving (dressed and everything) to go. When I called the next person, they had already left! I called my chairperson and he had to go to school to tell her to go home! that's not safe either.

My take on it is the bus companies aren't going to put their drivers & a busload of kids on the roads in a blizzard. It's dangerous & foolish. Their insurance companies would have a field day with rates.

I remember being in a bus that was trying to make it up a hill in our area. We were sliding down the hill & all over the road. To me it just means administration doesn't need a bus accident & to jeopardize their employees by insisting they come out in a predicted blizzard.

As a parent, I'd rather have them cancel it the night before rather than hear they're declaring a 1/2 day when I'm 2 hours away at work.

My sons school (prek) was listed pretty late last night. As a parent *I* was not going to take him in regardless.
Im sure the bus companies feel the same way! My mom used to drive a bus and there weren't very nice words when she JUST dropped kids off at school only to turn around and bring them back home again for early dismissals. Better to just close.

I would rather get a call the night before than 5am and then try and figure out what I should do with the kids if I have to go to work.

The roads are very dangerous with the few cars i saw on the road today.

Now imagine if everybody was on the road doing there normal routine.

Snow days are factored in to the school year now so with the possibility of getting a wintery mess, let them take off for safety.

Yes, moth nature does change course with the weather. Things change so when they do, don't get upset. I give credit to meteorologists (especially waterspourt) for providing us feedback to go by something. If you don't like there suggestions on what the weather can and will do, become a meteorologist your self so you don't have to relay on people.

It took me over an hour and 20 mins to get into the city from Queens this morning. The buses were running behind & very slowly.

The streets & sidewalks in the city are slippery & its only going to get worse.

I will never understand how people think storm conditions like this are ok to be commuting in Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm at work because the higher ups (who are ALL working from their homes) think having an office of unproductive people come in is better than having them stay home & be safe.

Most households have both parents working these days, more than when we were kids, so I think they like to give as much notice as possible so they can make babysitter plans.

I work for Nassau Boces too. THey announced over the loudspeaker that school was being cancelled due to the inclemant weather. But, honestly, it makes more sense to cancel earlier so parents can make plans.

Well, last year the NYC schools closed at 6am!! All the parents with children who needed to make childcare plans had NO TIME!

I think it was done the right way this time!
