Ladies that live in a school district that have an early cutoff and have a child that misses that cutoff

Do you know if they allow you to enroll your DC into private kindergarten and then join the year they really should be in...we're in Oceanside now and the cutoff is 12/31 which DD makes but we're moving to Merrick and the cutoff is 12/1 and DD's bday is 12/20 and some women have told me that if I enroll her in private kindergarten they'd allow her to join the correct year...anyone do this or heard of this??

Hmmmm...I dont know exactly how to explain this...

But....

Most private schools go by the cutoff date of the school district that they are located in. So one that you find may or may not have the cutoff date of 12/31...(My girls went to private pre K not kindergarten but I know that they used the 12/1 cut off date)

If the child has already attended kindergarten the new school district will allow them to attend first grade the following year. So, let's say that your DD attended Kindergarten in Oceanside she would them be able to attend 1st grade in Merrick. Even though by their cutoff she would be going into Kindergarten...KWIM?

Honestly, I would wait and have her join her year and just do private pre-school for the year. Being the oldest in the class is ALWAYS an advantageChat Icon Just what I see as a counselor in a high schoolChat Icon

Really in what way??? I totally feel like she'd be at a disdavantage..I'm sooo jumping ahead of myself now too bc she's only 20 mos..but I don't know, I didn't want her to be the oldest in her grade, esp being a girl maturity level wise...I really don't have a clue

I'm interested too. I was always one of the youngest (born 11/29) and found it an advantage. DD is born 12/1, and I was hoping she'd be one of the younger ones when the time comes. But, now that DD2 is born Jan 9, I'm having trouble deciding what would be best---because they could be 1 or 2 years apart in school, and I think sisters being only 1 year apart in school would have its own advantages.

Re: Ladies that live in a school district that have an early cutoff and have a child that misses that cutoff

They can only enter based on the age that they are truly supposed to be. If I am understanding what you are asking, they are placed based on age, not based on what school they were in beforehand. That's what I was told anyway.

btw, private and public schools in LI all have the same cutoff I BELIEVE (could be wrong). But Queens for ex, has a different cutoff.

Not sure the official answer to your question but since she is so young, why don't you wait and see how she develops. She might need or not need another year at home.

BTW, all of Nassau and Suffolk have the same cutoff I believe. Isn't it all Dec 1?

Re: Ladies that live in a school district that have an early cutoff and have a child that misses that cutoff

My SD also has a 12/1 cutoff, and their bday is 12/30. I will not try to enroll them earlier, I'd rather they be the oldest in their class than the youngest. If I try to get them in earlier, they could be a full year younger than other students. I think that this makes a HUGE difference at that age.

ETA: My bday is Jan 5, so I was always one of the oldest in my class, and never found this to be a disadvantage at all. If anything, it was an advantage.

ETA: So if she doesn't make the cutoff, do I just not send her to school one year or have her wait to go to preschool...I'm so confused by this?!?!?!?

DS is the same day as your DD. I am sending him to nursery at 3.5 (he will turn 4 a few months later) and then pre-k at 4.5.

now we do alot of various activities to keep him active and social which I feel is enough. Some people do send their kids to 3 years of nursery/pre-k. I just feel like he should have a few unstructured relaxed non school years while he still can.

I doubt this will shed any light for you at all, but I sent my DS to private school because of the 12/31 cut off. my DS's birthday is 12/27 and I did not like that the public schools wouldn't give me the choice of starting him late. I am happy with my decision.

I disagree with a blanket statement such as this one. There are plenty of children that are young for their grade and are not at a disadvantage or at an advantage. It all depends on the child.

Yes I agree. My DS is at a better advantage being the oldest in his class. My daughter has a late November birthday, as although seh is only 21 months, I see such a diffence between them and her developmental milestones are so much more on point than his. I hope that this means her being the youngest in her class will not affect her.

My birthday is in the beginning of January and knowing that I would miss the cut-off my parents had me do an extra year in preschool.

Re: Ladies that live in a school district that have an early cutoff and have a child that misses that cutoff

Adding my .02 as a teacher, and one who taught Kindergarten at that...

DD was born 12/12, and the cutoff here is 12/1. I'm actually thankful for that--though my DD seems to be advanced in some areas that would be considered "academic", I am in no rush to put her into Kindergarten. It's not what it used to be for us--these kids are EXPECTED to be reading when they leave K, and if they're not, they are oftentimes informally labeled. It's absolutely ridiculous. When I was in Kindergarten we played all day, made friends, made crafts, listened to stories, took naps. It is soooo different now. These poor kids work really hard.

So, I'd say...keep her back a year. It's not going to hurt her. Unless she is VERY advanced for her age when the time comes, I wouldn't rush it. Chat Icon

I agree with the last post, kindergarten used to be like preschool or daycare, but now it's a different game. Kids are expected to read, many kindergartens even expect them to write as well.

DS is 12/5, and I'm glad he misses the cutoff. He had a speech delay, and yes this is a broad generalization, but like many boys, I feel he will be more mature a year later and more likely to handle the work. Even now in daycare, I'm noticing he does better in a class of children who are younger than him overall. So in our case, it pays to wait a year. Not saying this is right for everyone, but it is for us.

As for the private kindergarten thing, I'm not aware this is an option.

Re: Ladies that live in a school district that have an early cutoff and have a child that misses that cutoff

my dd misses the cut off with her January 3rd birthday. I considered sending her to private kindergarten and asked my school district that if I did send her to private K would she be able to enter 1st grade. They would not give me a definite answer. They were still concerned with her January birthday so if I did send her to private K they might test her or they migt automatically tell me she has to repeat K.

Re: Ladies that live in a school district that have an early cutoff and have a child that misses that cutoff

I teach kindergarten and every year this is an issue in my class. I have to say that the children that are on the older side usually have the most success. The curriculum in kindergarten has changed greatly over the past few years....at least in my district the children are expected to leave reading and writing. The reality is some children don't because they are just not developmentally ready for it. However whether the child is the oldest or the youngest in the grade....they all seem to even out eventually.

I have to jump in. Yes, this is a blanket statement, but as an elementary teacher, you can "pick out" the fall babies just based on social and academic difficulties. The kids that struggle the most are 9/10 times a fall baby and were enrolled in kindergarten when they were 4 turning 5. It's almost always the case. Are there exceptions? Yes, but there are so many advantages to waiting. Think about HS and sports as well. Boys that are older tend to be bigger and better athletes. There was a recent study confirming that too!

I do understand your point and the other poster's point, however, I was just saying that I think like everything there are exceptions and we shouldn't generalize. I am a HS teacher so I see both sides of the issue as well. I have also known some "young" children in each grade that have been the superstars of their grade. It all depends on the child. The bottom line is we as parents know our children and know what is best for them. There are advantages and disadvantages of everything.
