Re: Ladies that live in a school district that have an early cutoff and have a child that misses that cutoff

I have a 12/18 baby and I am so happy he is staying home an extra year!

He will start preschool at 4.5. Life is so much rushing, working...I love that he gets this extra year to enjoy just playing.

I read a study conducted in Canada. Since almost all boys play hockey there...the older kids in the class were paid more attention by coaches, received more scholarships, and made it to the pros.
This lead to another study. In classes, teachers tend to spend more time on the older students. They set the bar.

Honestly, I would wait and have her join her year and just do private pre-school for the year. Being the oldest in the class is ALWAYS an advantageChat Icon Just what I see as a counselor in a high schoolChat Icon

I disagree with a blanket statement such as this one. There are plenty of children that are young for their grade and are not at a disadvantage or at an advantage. It all depends on the child.

I have to jump in. Yes, this is a blanket statement, but as an elementary teacher, you can "pick out" the fall babies just based on social and academic difficulties. The kids that struggle the most are 9/10 times a fall baby and were enrolled in kindergarten when they were 4 turning 5. It's almost always the case. Are there exceptions? Yes, but there are so many advantages to waiting. Think about HS and sports as well. Boys that are older tend to be bigger and better athletes. There was a recent study confirming that too!

I do understand your point and the other poster's point, however, I was just saying that I think like everything there are exceptions and we shouldn't generalize. I am a HS teacher so I see both sides of the issue as well. I have also known some "young" children in each grade that have been the superstars of their grade. It all depends on the child. The bottom line is we as parents know our children and know what is best for them. There are advantages and disadvantages of everything.

I am a HS teacher and agree with this. I honestly saw no correlation between my students' birth dates and their abilities.

I was born at the end of October, was one of the youngest, and graduated HS 7th out of 300.

My own late birthday caused me to take an interest and specifically watch for patterns - and I saw none.

I teach in Suffolk county. If a child has gone to kindergarten privately and comes to enroll in our public school as a first grader, he/she will have to test into 1st grade if he/she is "kindergarten age" according to our district's cutoff.

So basically if the child's skills aren't on first grade level he will be required to enroll in kindergarten again. I'm pretty certain we aren't the only district who does this.

My kids are in a private school. The cut-off they follow is the same as the public school district, December 1st. I know for a fact they won't take a child who doesn't meet the cut-off, and so enrolling them into a private K isn't an option in my kids school.

I teach kindergarten and every year this is an issue in my class. I have to say that the children that are on the older side usually have the most success. The curriculum in kindergarten has changed greatly over the past few years....at least in my district the children are expected to leave reading and writing. The reality is some children don't because they are just not developmentally ready for it. However whether the child is the oldest or the youngest in the grade....they all seem to even out eventually.

I totally agree. I teach kindergarten and sometimes that one year makes such a huge difference. I can usually tell the November/December babies from the January babies right away. I'm sure it all evens out eventually but I was happy that my DS is a January baby and will be one of the oldest when he starts out.

I know of people/parents that have done that but also a lot that wait.
Sometimes the child isnt ready and they wait and are happy they did.
I think it all depends on your child and how they are rather then their age.

I'm happy to hear that kids tend to even out by HS. I personally don't think *non teacher* parents are aware of the fact that holding back a year could benefit their child. Many people are in a rush to just get them in school and "ahead of the game" when they may in fact, could get them ahead by simply waiting a year.
