Did I overreact?

Dh and I took dd on a walk to the park in our neighborhood today. There is a rather large pond that was partially frozen over. There were 3 boys around 12 -13 years old hanging out. One of them got the bright idea to kick the ball onto the ice and then went and walked on the ice to get it. He continued to kick the ball further.

I was scared the kid was going to fall through so I called the police dept. As we were leaving we saw the police officer talking to the boys. Dh keeps making fun of me for reporting it. Did I overreact?

Did I overreact?

Nope. It’s a warmer day today. Better safe than sorry.

Re: Did I overreact?

You did not over react. You could have saved those boys lives. Glad you called.

Re: Did I overreact?

Nope. You did the right thing. Our town closed the skating lake because it is warm and they said it would melt.

Nope. Saw on yesterday’s news that boys were rescued from a pond in Rye NY. So dangerous and with today’s warm weathers it’s even worse.

Re: Did I overreact?

I probably would have just said something directly to them to warn them that it is warm out and the pond is likely not frozen solid. But no harm in calling police, it kept them safe and that’s what matters

Good. They were putting their lives in danger.
I think most kids would roll their eyes, laugh or completely ignore a random adult telling them to stop what they were doing. Or telling them they were risking their lives.

Hopefully this scared them enough to think twice next time.

You did the right thing. I would hope someone like you would do the same thing is they saw my child on the ice and I wasn’t around. Ultimately, had you not said something and that day or even next week a kid fell into the ice in your community you would have felt tremendous guilt.

Totally did the right thing.

What if they fell. You would feel obligated to jump in to save them. What if they fell 5 mins after you left? You’d feel so guilty.

I hope the police just yelled/scared them a bit. I’m sure it’s kids being kids but they were doing something extremely dangerous. It really does take a village.

If someone called the cops on my kids doing something this stupid, I would be grateful. Thank god they weren’t hurt.

It’s been warm a few days. Nothing is frozen over.

Re: Did I overreact?

You did the right thing. My mom when she was a teen took her siblings to the park on a day like today (weather was starting to warm up and they were all going stir crazy in the house) and was watching 5 of them (yes, 5 of her brothers and sisters). Anyway, my uncle who was the youngest maybe 4 or 5 yrs old ran ahead on a frozen lake and fell in. My mom ran in after him. They both almost died that day. Needless to say yes I would’ve definitely called the cops. I don’t think kids take adults as seriously as they do the cops.

Yes, I would have called the cops too. The boys should have the sh!t scarred out of them. . . Better that than dead. They'd probably laugh off a random adult telling them it's dangerous.

Agreed. I used to be a middle school teacher, so I know the age well. Calling the police to scare their pants off was the way to go. I wouldn’t have gotten personally invovled either.

You don't know the kids or how they would react, so it's definitely better that you called the police rather than talk to them yourself - especially since your child was with you.

Getting the info from the police that they were doing something dangerous probably made a bigger impression than if they'd heard it from a random person. So you did the right thing.

Nope, you did the right thing. Kids can be stupid and not realize that they are putting themselves in danger.

I would have said something to the boys though.

Same. But 13 y/o boys? They'd probably just flip you off and keep doing what they're doing. Maybe they'd take it to heart more since it's a cop telling them.

This is why I called the police instead of saying something to him directly.

Re: Did I overreact?

I think you did the right thing. Teens wouldn't listen to some random stranger yelling at them. At least the police can speak with them about safety and teach them a lesson.
I don't think the police would scare them either as PP said. They're teens. They'd listen to the cops.

i agree...thinking back to my teenage years i would have rolled my eyes as soon as the adult looking out for me turned their back. i think that the message from the police officer has a better chance of being received.
