I'm in queens and this has been going on wayyy before I was even born. They aren't looking for personal information or trying to steal your identity. They just want the 5cent deposit. Tell your neighbor to put his/her bottles/cans in a separate bag and make life easier for them. Maybe even go up to them and tell them you'll put what you have on the side so they don't have to go through the trash. Completely harmless.
Yes. The same people every Wed night come down my block and go through everyone's recyclables looking for cans & bottles. I don't mind it, they're friendly and say hello... although it's a bit invasive that they come onto the actual property and don't even wait for it to be at the curb... it doesn't affect me personally bc they never go through mine anymore bc they must have figured out I don't have any soda bottles or cans bc I return them myself already. I think it's a nice idea to separate it out for them... why not help them out ?

Garbage?
The guy who collects bottles on my street drives a Lexus suv, which has always made me laugh. I used to return the bottles myself but there is no way I have time to do that for a few bucks anymore

As long as they are not trespassing and leaving a mess, there is nothing that she can do, short of putting out her recycling right before the trucks come.
Take a ride to Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan and see the giant shopping carts loaded with plastic bags of deposit cans and bottles on a daily basis.
It's sad that garbage picking has to be the source of income for some people.

As long as it's at the curb I don't really see an issue. In Queens, we had people come into our yard to collect and that bugged me. My neighbor actually set home alone style booby traps for them, but he was crazy pants.

I wouldn't be concerned. They are just looking to get a little extra money - I assume if they're that desperate to sort through trash, they need it.
If she is so concerned about people going through her trash, tell her to put her bottles in a separate bag for the people - then they won't go through her stuff.

I didn't really ask last night why she felt the need to confront him yesterday. DH spoke with her this morning and she said she confronted him because he goes on her property - doesn't stay in the street or by the curb (we don't have sidewalks). We keep our cans behind our gates (she doesn't) so she said if she has recycling that she didn't put out for some reason, he walks up her driveway and goes through them there.
Like I said, I don't know her reasons. I'm just pissed at both her and the creep that did this.

Hope he gets caught from her cameras. He is still walking on HER property. Sorry, but fk that. I would not be Happy either. He should wait and go thru it at the curb; or when its out.
She is actually doing him a favor by making him money; and he has the balls to come back and do all that damage???

Ahh gotcha- like I said, it's one thing to go through it at the curb and another entirely to go onto someone's property.
He's obviously unhinged to go back and do all that damage. I hope they can see him on the cameras, but I wonder if he'll have the balls to come back!

Semi post hijack- Always call the police in matters like this, even if there is no immediate action needed. Maybe if she had given them the heads up (like she did with you) the police could have stepped up patrols on the block. Don't feel bad, it is their job!

Wow- did not expect that update! I didn't comment originally, but I never get how people on the boards are like " oh, it's ok for some stranger to trespass on your property" Guess what, it's not, it's actually illegal. I don't care that most garbage pickers are just trying to make some cash and are non violent...I would report it immediately to the police. But, your neighbor really should not have confronted the person, she should have just called the police about him. You are allowed to feel safe in your home.
