You keep up with traffic - If everyone is going 75 in the middle lane and you aren't comfortable doing that, you move to the right lane. (I'm talking the general 'you' here)
I hate when people insist on driving in the middle lane (or the LEFT lane - GOOD GOD !!) going to speed limit on principle - You're doing more harm than good, you're not the police - move the hell over and let the traffic flow.
Exactly! Or stay off the highway altogether if you are uncomfortable with the speed factor. There are plenty of alternatives that are safer for you.
OR follow the limit, you know the LAW. I mean I can't understand people's rationale on this. Car accidents are not something to take lightly and traveling at excessive speeds on a congested highway is dumb as fcuk. There are so many accidents that result in deaths on a daily basis on LI. Yet there are still people making up excuses as to why speeding above the limit is justifiable.
Why should people who actually are abiding by the law stay off the road? Why can't the people who feel the need to keep up with the fucktards going over the speed limit stay off the roads and use alternate routes?

In regard to the left lane being for passing only, is that an actual law? If someone is doing 80 MPH or higher, they are going to stay in the left lane. It makes no sense for them to pass someone, get in the middle lane, just to get back in the left lane a minute later to pass someone else. It would result in them changing lanes a hundred times.
Yes it is the rule but that rule was made long before the volume of cars we have are on the roads. If people ONLY used the left lane for passing, it would take people 7 hours to get home every night on the LIE! We need more super highways with 4 and 5 lanes going in each direction to accommodate the volume we have. If you drive upstate on the Thru Way or North Way you see the real use of the left lane for passing practiced much more. They even have stretches of the roads that remind slower drivers to stay right and to use the left lane to pass. They also have much more realistic speed limits.
I know it's the "rule" but I meant is it an actual law vs just common courtesy. For example, if your not passing someone, would you get a ticket for just cruising the left lane?
Side note: I know someone who got charged with reckless driving for doing 50 in the left lane on the LIE. So while technically he was within the speed limit, the officer thought he was posing a danger to the drivers around him. I know he planned to fight it but I don't remember how it turned out for him.

At or below speed limit. People ride on my ass & I get passed left & right, and you know what, I don't give a fck.. cause I don't feel comfortable driving at high speed... so I stay in the right lane & mind my business moving along like a turtle (the min speed posted is 40 & I'm always around 50 so I'm good with the law)... There's no place I need to be so fast to risk my life driving like an impatient as*hole & risk killing myself or someone else to save a few minutes.

But that would be too hard to get out of the house early or on time.

Middle lane on Highway Speed
Why has it evolved that people who keep their lives in order and follow the rules/the law are sanctimonious? I feel as if this has developed bc people want a comeback as to why they can't follow the rules/the law and why they can't get their lives together.
It's a speed limit, not a suggestion. My dads a cop and when he was in a car, 5 miles over and you would get a ticket. Anyone who tried to bring it to court lost. He never lost a case in court. Never.
I really don't understand the mentality that so many have, and I feel like it's invaded every area of life.

Re: Middle lane on Highway Speed
Also, for those that drive or close to the speed limit, do you find that faster drivers FLY off the entrance ramps to merge? In particular, the SSP and NSP where the ramps are VERY SHORT?
Sometimes, I find the right lane to be dangerous, if if I'm the one following the LAW.

Re: Middle lane on Highway Speed
In Nj the speed limit is 65 on most highways. Honestly, if you can't keep up with the speed of traffic, then either stay in the right Lane or local roads only as you are a hazardous driver. Saying that people can just pass me, is just as obnoxious as people who tailgate and are speed demons who zig zag through traffic. For me, my driving is dependent upon multiple factors, the weather, the sun, the general speed of traffic.

Middle lane on Highway Speed
If you're going the speed limit following the LAW, you as a driver are not being hazardous and putting others at risk.
You are, however, being a hazard and putting others at risk, when you're breaking the law and being an idiot driving a high speed on the LIE and trying to bully over drivers so you can fly like an asshole. Speeding saves minutes. And not many. It's not worth it.
Question: What would happen if you were hit and your kid injured or worse by someone flying 75 on the LIE, someone who wasn't "being a hazard" and was merely "keeping up with traffic." And the result of the injuries was far worse than if they were going the speed limit? I gues you wouldn't care. I guess you wouldn't sue. I guess the speeder with no regard for life wouldn't be at fault being they were "keeping up with traffic. "
There's a huge difference between 30 and 45, even. Look it up.

Yes. Merging and seeing others merge on the NSP is anxiety producing. Not a big fan of the NSP. I like the LIE better. I normally stick to the right anyway, sometimes the middle. The assholes are normally in the left. I don't let anyone bully me though.

there is a huge difference between 35 and 45, but the speed on the highway LIE is not 35 or 45. Driving at 35 or 45 on the LIE is being a road hazard in non inclement weather when there is no traffic. The police officer can give you a ticket for driving too slowly on a highway. I am not advocating for driving like a maniac, on the LIE, 65 is likely the safest high speed because it twists and turns a lot. But going 35 on the high way is just as dangerous.

I'm not advocating going 35 on a highway .... Or going even under the highway speed limit... My point is that there's a huge difference between 35 and 45 and that should translate to the huge difference it is when someone chooses to not drive 60, but 80! on the highway.
It's common sense.

Middle lane on Highway Speed
Left lane is for passing, middle is for driving, right is for entering and exiting. If you want to go slower in the middle- I see no problem with it. If you're going slow in the left lane and blocking traffic, I see a problem with it. You're blocking the flow of traffic. If you're using the right lane to pass, I see a problem with it, you're creating an unsafe situation.

Thank you. And fyi...minimum speed is 40 so as long as you aren't going under that you aren't a hazzard. That was how the road was designed. For min speed 40, speed limit 55. The only hazards on the road are the @ssholes who speed. Maybe THEY should stay off the highways if they can't handle driving like a law abiding citizen.
Nothing gives me greater pleasure than seeing those aholes pulled over for speeding. Makes my day. Dh used to be sure to take his time and write the summons really slowly since they were in SUCH a rush.

Respect the rules of the road. There is a speed limit because that is how the road was designed. There is no keeping up with traffic.
The roads (except LIE) were designed for cars that maxes out at 40mph. They weren't designed for a leisurely drive like someone suggested. By hey were designed for 1920's cars that could go fast.
But now we have to live with the design and the amount of cars on LI cannot support 40mph speed limits. And who are we kidding 75% of the time there is so much traffic you can't go near the speed limit

If there is so much traffic, then you should be able to go slower. I was on the LIE yesterday and didn't go any faster than 65. Maybe because people were off and not in a rush yesterday but most of them were going the same.
The problem is that everyone is in a rush. No one wants to leave ahead of time and take their time. I worked in an office that when the weather was bad no one left early and luckily the company was ok just letting people come in whenever they could. The people who drove on the main, cleaned roads were always late because they decided not to get up early and clean their cars off. I lived closer and drove the roads that were harder to drive on and was always on time. Priorities.

So hows this weeks long debate doing at changing the world, or at least just the LIE? Has all of the time spent arguing with each other stopped the speeding on the LIE? Ill be on it in a bit, Ill let you know if everyone on it is taking this debate on here to heart.

I understand what you're implying, but larger change often starts with casual discussions.
