Middle lane on Highway Speed
The LIE during rush hour is crazy, especially in the morning. If you don't normally drive on it during that time you may not realize just how fast people drive. In general the people in the left lane are going over 80. I drove in daily for 2 years and I rarely ever saw anyone get pulled over that early in the morning. Trust me, I don't think it's safe at all and I never even attempted to go in the left lane. But it's the reality of that highway, it's very fast. Thankfully I take the LIRR now and don't have to deal with it anymore. It's a nightmare.

What is the speed limit?
I ask because I got pulled over for going 69 on the northern state where the speed limit is 55. Is the speed limit on the LIE faster?
The speed limit on LI parkways/the expressway is 55.
Not 65, not 75.

For the love of God.
THE LEFT LANE IS MEANT FOR PASSING. NOT SPEEDING.
I come across so many people just sitting in the left lane. If you aren't passing people, move over. If you have a line of cars behind you, move over. If no one else is on the road, move over.
People may say I am breaking the law by going over the speed limit but they are also breaking the law as the left lane is for PASSING. There are numerous studies showing it is dangerous for people tor "force" people to go around them because they think they are going "fast enough" in the left lane and if you want to go faster you can go around them.

This shouldn't even be a discussion, IMO. There's a speed limit. It's not a flexible number you can tack on 5-10 extra mph to suit the flow of traffic. It's not dependent on what lane you're in. It's pretty black and white, if you ask me. I used to think of the "with the flow of traffic" way but too many assholes now go 80.
Speed kills. Nevermind a ticket and points.

But the if the left lane is for passing, then nobody should be in it for more than the few minutes it takes you to pass, right? You shouldn't be in the left lane cruising doing 80 or slowly doing 55 or anything for longer than it takes to pass someone and get back over- right?

I never see anyone in the left lane just "passing" another car and then moving into another lane. People drive in the left lane, and at ridiculous speeds. If the left lane is only for passing, shouldn't it be empty 90% of the time?
And if I'm going the speed limit and you drive up my ass or put your brights on me, you can be sure I will be slowing down and not moving.

Right lane should be speed limit. Middle lane should be the speed limit- 5mph over. Left lane should be 5mph-10mph over the speed limit.
I would love this to be said to cop. Not trying to single you out, but this thinking is baffling to me. And so many think this way.
If you ever get pulled over in the left lane, please tell the officer, "officer, the left lane is 5-10 mph over the speed limit." See what happens.
People take driving way too lightly. I do too at times. We do it so much it becomes routine but people's lives are at stake.

I got a ticket and I think 4 points on my license for going 73 on a 65. I set my sh!t on cruise control now.
I got a 69 in a 50 on 440 In Staten Island. I was going 75 and he lowered it bc of clean license.
$200+ ticket and 4 points.
I stay in middle and within 5 miles of speed limit.

DING, DING, DING!!!!
It is not rocket science. I love the people who stay in the left lane and go 20 mph over the limit just to 'pass someone' for 40 minutes...
A lot of people on LI need to retake drivers ed and learn the basics.

Re: Middle lane on Highway Speed
On the Autobahn I go anywhere from 80-120 mph (when I did my driving test here you learn how to drive at that speed limit).
When there is a speed limit, I follow that speed limit. The road has been engineered to go at a certain speed limit. It's simple- go that speed.

Exactly. That is the main problem is that people don't get themselves out of the house early enough to give themselves time to get where they need to. Go to bed earlier, stop hitting the snooze button and leave early enough that you can drive the speed limit.

I hear what you're saying, but what I'm saying is this is how most highways run, like it or not. I obviously wouldn't say that to a cop if I was pulled over, but I am friends with tons of them, and I can guarantee they all think/drive as I said.

Re: Middle lane on Highway Speed
70 is completely unacceptable. The speed limit is 55 MPH. Look at how many people are killed every day in car accident for speeding. Add in the cell phones, and you have a more-than-lethal mix.

Re: Middle lane on Highway Speed
I spend a lot of time on LI highways, all of them. And I speed, am not going to lie...and sometimes wonder how fast you have to be going to get pulled over. I have gone past cops going 70, with people ahead of me going faster, and don't see anyone getting pulled over. So obviously, right or wrong, there is some factors going into what the "going" speed is on our highways if the cops aren't blinking at people going 70+.
So to answer the OP, I am with your DH. But it can also be determined by time of day/volume.

The problem is that everyone thinks the rules can be broken or bent in life and that if Joe Schmo next to me is doing it, then I can too. I would rather do the right thing and be passed up constantly than to get in a horrible accident.

Re: Middle lane on Highway Speed
I don't think it has anything to do with allowing yourself time to get from a to b- I think people are just entitled and don't care about causing injury to others, or breaking laws.
One of my friends went out for a run this morning and got clipped by an idiot who ran a stop sign because the was texting. At least the idiot had the good grace to appear shocked and hopefully she learned her lesson. But really, we should not have to even discuss these things because they would not be an issue if people followed laws and logic.

Last week I was on the LIE with my dh in the morning and I saw 4 people pulled over (all of them in the HOV lane though by themselves so again another rule that people think they can bend). Police DO pull people over so don't be surprised one day you do if you continue to go 15 miles over the speed limit.

Re: Middle lane on Highway Speed
People drive wayyy to fast on the highways. Before I had DS I would drive at around 75 on the LIE & people would still pass me like I was standing still. Now I go the speed limit. I won't chance it with DS.
In regard to the left lane being for passing only, is that an actual law? If someone is doing 80 MPH or higher, they are going to stay in the left lane. It makes no sense for them to pass someone, get in the middle lane, just to get back in the left lane a minute later to pass someone else. It would result in them changing lanes a hundred times.

You are right. If they are not late, they think they are entitled. I think it was this board that someone told me that rules can be broken as they are just rules.

Yes it is the rule but that rule was made long before the volume of cars we have are on the roads. If people ONLY used the left lane for passing, it would take people 7 hours to get home every night on the LIE! We need more super highways with 4 and 5 lanes going in each direction to accommodate the volume we have. If you drive upstate on the Thru Way or North Way you see the real use of the left lane for passing practiced much more. They even have stretches of the roads that remind slower drivers to stay right and to use the left lane to pass. They also have much more realistic speed limits.

You keep up with traffic - If everyone is going 75 in the middle lane and you aren't comfortable doing that, you move to the right lane. (I'm talking the general 'you' here)
I hate when people insist on driving in the middle lane (or the LEFT lane - GOOD GOD !!) going to speed limit on principle - You're doing more harm than good, you're not the police - move the hell over and let the traffic flow.
