You keep up with traffic - If everyone is going 75 in the middle lane and you aren't comfortable doing that, you move to the right lane. (I'm talking the general 'you' here)
I hate when people insist on driving in the middle lane (or the LEFT lane - GOOD GOD !!) going to speed limit on principle - You're doing more harm than good, you're not the police - move the hell over and let the traffic flow.
Best police "chase" ever

According to this mind frame why have any speed limit? Before you know it 70-75 mph becomes 'too slow' for the left lane and now 80-95 mph is expected to be the 'norm' for 'passing'...why bother?
The state should just let everyone make up their own 'limit' as to what they deem is a good speed to be going in whatever lane they are in and basically let the highways become a game of Russian Roulette. Basically saying - having everyone at different speeds all over the place is a recipe for disaster.

I agree with this!! Plus it isn't like 55 is some magic number for safety or anything. That speed limit was created in 70s during the energy crisis and 55 was determined to be the most fuel efficient speed. That's why in many other states the speed limit has actually been brought up to 70.
That said I always go with the flow of traffic (usually less than 10 over the limit) and have never gotten a ticket. I hate when people drive slow in the left lane. He highway is not the place to be sanctimonious especially with so many instances of road rage.

I spend a lot of time on LI highways, all of them. And I speed, am not going to lie...and sometimes wonder how fast you have to be going to get pulled over.
I have to say, this thread got me thinking -- and then your question above too so I asked, since my SO has been a police officer for just shy of 22 years, and over 12 of those years were spent on highway patrol on the Long Island Expressway.
So, I texted him lol and I said:
"Babe, as a guy with tons of highway experience, when you pulled people over for speeding on the Expressway, what speed were you looking for? Like, was over a certain speed the trigger for you?"
His response:
"70 mph. Over that in a 55, you got written." (So, 71mph+)
He later in the convo added that was pretty much standard for all his guys on highway. He was originally a regular highway patrolman and then got promoted to Sergeant and oversaw a bunch of highway guys so he kind of knew the general rules of thumb and what they all did. That being said, he did mention he feels the State Police (Northern/Southern Pkwys, etc.) are sometimes stricter. He was only speaking for his experience on the LIE.
...I'm not saying I feel one way is right or wrong or whatever. I just figured I would ask someone who actually does this for a living. Personally, I feel people are allowed to drive in a manner that makes them comfortable. If that means going the exact speed limit or driving in a certain lane, that's fine by me. I never get annoyed at anybody - I just do my thing and they do theirs. It's personal preference and there's nothing wrong with people who want to be careful or cautious.

I thought it also had to do with population density. I live upstate in an densely populated area like LI and the speed limit is 55. When I travel to less densely populated areas, the speed limit is 65.

Re: Middle lane on Highway Speed
Heres the thing, obviously there is a speed limit and obviously people break it, regardless. No one is saying its right that people are doing 70-75, but the fact of the matter is they are. So by doing 55 in the left lane, you are only putting yourself and other drivers at risk by impeding the flow of traffic. That doesn't make it OK, but it is the fact of the matter. I personally don't drive 70+ on the LIE, but I do tend to do about 65, tops 70. So no, I am not going to putz along in the left lane doing 65 even though TECHNICALLY I could bc the speed limit is 55. Whats the point in that? I can't change how everyone else operates on the LIE, neither can a 3 page debate on here. What I can do is go with the flow, be it right or wrong instead of being the LIE speed police. We have Cops whose job that is. Simple fact is, most people exceed the speed limit. Keep everyone moving along and if you're doing 55, thats OK, just stay in the right lane.

I understand there are times the left lane won't be for passing. However for example last night I was in a line of cars on the southern state stuck behind someone doing 60 in the left lane. I am ok with him doing 60 but he could have done 60 in the middle or right lane. Instead people had to cut across the other 2 lanes to go around him to completely open road.

This logic might work for a road like the LIE that is mostly straight, but when Robert Moses planned the Northern and Southern State Parkways, he intended them for leisurely drives. I think the speed limit was originally 35 or 45 mph. He didn't expect them to become what they are today. The twists and turns of both parkways make speeds higher than 55mph VERY dangerous and that is why people need to drive the speed limit on them.

Middle lane on Highway Speed
HAHAHA I went back to visit NY and had to slow down. Middle lane (if you have one) should be faster than the right lane because technically you're passing the right lane. Left lane is ALWAYS a passing lane.
Speeding is ALWAYS speeding.
Driving slow is illegal here. If you drive the speed limit just to be an goodie-two-shoes and prove a point you *WILL* get a ticket. You can't be a danger to those around you. If you can't handle driving on a highway, then don't. If you are in the right lane, fine. But in the middle lane? No. You cannot drive speed limit in the middle lane with traffic piling behind you. It encourages road rage and it is dangerous. Move your butt over to the right lane. Don't like it because it's slow? Then use the little pedal on the right and keep up with the flow of traffic.
We have highways with 7 lanes plus two HOVs so you figure out which lane you need to BE in then the speed you have to be. Good luck on figure out what the speed limit is. Which is why I hate driving in Houston. However I love driving our Toll around Austin with speeds up to 80mph because no one is dumb enough to prove a point. Move aside.
Even just two lane road (one each way) move over if you're slower. GET OUT OF THE WAY.
Are some people speeding? Yes Are you a cop? Probably Not? Is getting angry about it going to make a difference? Actually yes, in YOUR driving attitude Drive carefully, safely and smart Move over, keep up with the traffic, left lane is always for passing.
During rush hour, who's really going speed limit anyway? And if the traffic is going above speed limit and YOU are the cause of road rage and angry reactions and over reactions what real good did you do? Which is why aggressive and passive aggressive driving should BOTH be cracked down on. Being right doesn't make it better when you've caused harm to others.

We should all be doing the speed limit on purpose. Because G-d forbid there is a tragic accident, do you want to feel as though your disregard for the law cost someone life or limb?

Exactly! Or stay off the highway altogether if you are uncomfortable with the speed factor. There are plenty of alternatives that are safer for you.

But the highway would be the "safer alternative" if people would stop racing all over the place...
Also, I am confused by the logic here. You wrote "There are plenty of alternatives that are safer for you." So you are acknowledging that the excess speed makes the highways unsafe, yet you are okay with speeding anyway? What?
I'm sorry. Maybe I am reading something wrong, but I literally do not understand what point you're making.

Yes, the current driving mentality is why there are fatal accidents almost daily on the Southern State. It's just not meant to be driven on at 70MPH.

Exactly. With that logic, we should abolish the speed limits altogether on the highways and turn it into the Autobahn and make it a free for all so you can go as fast as you want and us losers who prefer to be safe and drive at (GASP!) 55-60 miles per hour will just have to stay off the highways because we can't handle them. Right?

Middle lane on Highway Speed
here in NC, the speed limit on the major highways is 65 - 70 in some spots. I usually keep it to within 5 over if over at all

I do 60-65 in right lane and people still ride my a** so while I don't think 70-75 is "reasonable, " I do feel it is what a lot of people do, and even faster.

I really think it depends on the type of highway.. like someone mentioned the southern state.. I feel like 75 is actually pretty fast on there, there are so many curves.

Re: Middle lane on Highway Speed
Also, people who respect the speed limit are neither being spiteful nor sanctimonious. That way of thinking is absurd.
When young, innocent lives are taken because of recklessness, --speeding, texting, tailgating--we are the first to condemn--aren't we?
Some people don't want or can't afford to be pulled over. Some lost friends or family in accidents. Some just respect the law. But to think that their choice is about you....is absurd.
