Frying a Turkey

We are hosting Thanksgiving this year and want to serve fried turkey.

Has anyone done this at home? How safe is it?

The Butterball fryer looks tempting but not sure how safe it actually is.

Re: Frying a Turkey

I had a friend do it at my house. Definitely have to do it outside, and do it far away from your house or any structures. At least 20 feet away. Have plenty of fire extinguishers on hand. The scariest part is lowering the turkey.

You should try to find somebody that has done it before to help out.

DHs family does it every year. You need to make sure it's completely defrosted and dry before putting it in the oil. They do it toward the middle of their yard so it's not near the house.

We own the Butterball fryer and have used it for several years now. It's very easy to use and the turkey comes out great and moist. Just make sure the turkey is very dry before you put it in the fryer.

We love that it's for indoor use and how quick it cooks, but keep in mind that it does require a lot of oil.

We did it last year and it was great!

You have to make sure turkey is totally dry. The trickiest part is lowering it in. The fryer came with a hook that had a triangle handle on it. We slid a 2 x 4 through and one person held each end. It was probably about 4 or 5 feet long. It made it much easier, no one had to worry about splatter.

I would definitely do it again--the turkey was so much better! And it was such a fun experience :)

Another tip is to fill the pot with water, lower the turkey in so you can see how much the water will displace and then you know exactly how much oil to use, and the turkey will be covered perfectly without any spillage from filling it up too much. Does that make sense?
We also use a broom stick to slide through the top so you can stand far away from the pot while you're lowering the turkey in.

If you do end up getting a deep fryer, I would do a test run before the big day. Onviously you woulnd't use as big a turkey but you would at least get the hang of it.
Dh cousin does it for the past 5 years and it's great. Just keep a safe distance from the house and keep extinguishers on hand just in case.

This is the best tip. DH overfilled the oil the first year we fried a turkey. When he put the turkey in it overflowed and was almost a disaster. The turkey takes up a lot of room in there so you really don't need a lot of oil at all.

We also started brining the turkey a few days before and that makes it so good. I think Alton Brown has a recipe for the brine.

I have used the oil fryer and the oil-less Butterball fryer. I personally love the oil-less. It is a WHOLE lot less messy and dangerous. It still tastes wonderful.

we do it every year. never had a problem. make sure you don't overfill the pot with oil, make sure its on even ground and be very careful when you lower it in. I'm not a turkey fan, but it tastes so good when its fried!
