Deep frying a turkey?

My husband really wants to have a deep fried turkey. We don't have a deep fryer and I really don't want to buy one, unless we know we love it. Anyway I would like to do it for Christmas Day (we are hosting - Thanksgiving we are going to the in-laws).

Does anyone know if you can rent it?
How much do they cost to purchase?

Re: Deep frying a turkey?

i've never tried it, but BIL (from N. Carolina) says they ONLY deep fry their turkey because it is sooooooo good.

I don't think i could get used to that idea!

Try LNT, BB&B, Target, Walmart, etc.

Re: Deep frying a turkey?

Im confused, the deep fryer is big enough to place the entire turkey in there? or do you cut it up?

Re: Deep frying a turkey?

Yeah, that is the thing - I am trying to be really health concious now. But I just thought I wouldn't eat the skin. Anyway I have heard so many raves about it and how juicy the turkey is.

I saw one at HD for $100.

Thanks all! Still going to try and find a place to rent it or borrow one.

Re: Deep frying a turkey?

I've had it and thought it was ok - nothing special - but everyone else does rave about it.

Just, if you decide to do it, be REALLY careful. It's very dangerous and easy to start a fire if you don't know what your doing. And even if you do.

Re: Deep frying a turkey?

I don't know if you can rent them, but I can tell you that they are incredible! It's the only way my family will eat them now. Last year, I cooked one in the oven and BIL fried one in the back yard. The fried one was so much juicier and cooked in 1/4 of the time. The only downside is no gravy. That's why we cook a little one on the side.

There are all different brands and price ranges. You do need a lot of outside space to cook it and it can be dangerous. But, they are so worth it.

Re: Deep frying a turkey?

Home Depot has a basic one for less than $50.00. We've been doing it for a few years now and LOVE it!
* a 12 pound turkey takes approx. 45 minutes
* my oven is free for side dishes and baking
and best of all:
* my DH stays out of the kitchen and frys the turkey outside!

Re: Deep frying a turkey?

I saw an electric one in a catalog recently - that is supposed to be less dangerous - maybe BB&B or Linens N Things....

They are delicious - my dad does it this way for the past few years.

My DH was totally opposed at first for the same reason, but I made him Google the nutritional information and it's not much different than roasted turkey. The oil is so hot that it instantly seals the skin (the best part Chat Icon )

You just take it out of the oil, let it sit a little while then slice it up Chat Icon

Re: Deep frying a turkey?

I was in Costco today - they have a big fancy turkey deep-fryer for $99.

The costco in commack had tons - I'm sure the other locations have them too.
