Halloween & grandparents
Yes I know its still August
When dc was a baby we drove to our parents house to show his costume off.
Last year dc LOVED trick or treating and didn't want to stop, we had to cut it short to drive over, and then ds was up past his bedtime cause its never just 5 minutes and was a weekday... we didn't drive to my parents because they weren't talking to us.
This year we will have newborn before the 2 month old shots, so I'll probably be staying home while dh takes ds out trick or treating...... When I grew up we never drove to my grandma's house and I got to trick or treat alot of hours, yet dh always went to his grandparents house......
So what do you all do with your dc?

My parents and my inlaws come to our house. Last year my parents were at work so it was only my inlaws, but in the past they have both come here. I get pizza for everyone.

I have what they want, so they cN come here. I dont like driving around on Halloween with all the kids out. People in the roads etc. so if they want to see ds bad enough, they can come here. If not, I will text them a pic.

Re: Halloween & grandparents
I think it depends on the age too. For DS1 first and second Halloween we did it all together. My inlaws drove to nj where we live and all went to my sisters neighborhood to go trick or treating. My nieces and nephews are a little older. My parents too and then we went to a few houses.
Last year we took the boys to my IL's the weekend before halloween and brought their costumes over for pics and to show them. On Halloween we went trick or treating with friends. My parents live around the corner so we stopped at their house for candy. Also, the first two halloweens were on a weekend.

Last year was technically DS's 2nd Halloween, but he was only 17 days old for his first. Everyone came here to see him (and DD, but she didn't dress up) and I got pizza for dinner.

Re: Halloween & grandparents
My aunt comes to my house, helps with handing out candy before and after AJ goes out and back in. They also take a half block walk with AJ to have the experience. It works for everyone. They leave around 7:30, we all share a dinner.

Re: Halloween & grandparents
Last year DS was only 5 months and he was sick- but we put him in costume for pictures and my parents and inlaws came over. They didn't stay for dinner since he wasn't feeling well. This year he will be 17 months- and I think we are going to hold off one more year on trick or treating. So I will invite them over again and if they want to stay for dinner, they can. When we start trick or treating next year, it never occured to me they would see him- I just figured I would send them a picture of the costume.

Re: Halloween & grandparents
When Halloween was on the weekend, we went to my parents' early and trick or treated around their neighborhood a little bit. Then we came home and went around our neighborhood.
Now that DS is in school, and Halloween has been on a weekday, we just ToT in our neighborhood.

Re: Halloween & grandparents
I'm not a mom but we would always go to my grandma 's. Since she had so many grandchildren it would be impossible for her to go see us all. I am 30 years old and still show up at grandma's for Halloween.
On Halloween we would trick or treat in our neighborhood until about 5 , then grab dinner ( often at mcdonalds and that was the only day of the year we would go there, I think my mom threw in the healthy towel that day ) and then go to my grandma's where we would meet up with our cousins and do a touch more trick or treating in her neighborhood.
We also lived only 5 minutes away so that makes a difference too.

Re: Halloween & grandparents
I usually can't finish work early on that day b/c October and November are busy for me. To me it is a day for friends and not a day to pose for the grandparents. They can see pictures. My mom saw him one Halloween because she babysat while we went to a wedding.

Halloween & grandparents
We've only had one halloween so far and DD didn't even trick or treat, we just put her in a costume and took pics. My mom stopped by on her way home from work to see DD in her costume and give her a little gift she had for her. I don't remember why but MIL didn't see her, she was probably working. In the future I can't see us driving to see my parent's and DH's mom on Halloween.
When I was a kid I'm not sure if we did this every year but I do remember all the cousin's gathering at my grandma's house after trick or treating in our separate neighborhoods.

Re: Halloween & grandparents
Last year we drove to my parents house. His parents are only 15 mins further but we didn't go there because she had such a long day. Do what you think is best for both of your little monsters I probably wouldn't go visiting if I had a newborn, it's just too exhausting & you want to enjoy the time with your other DC also.

Re: Halloween & grandparents
this will be my DDs second halloween, but last year my DH was at work so i took her to my parents house to walk around the neighborhood. there is way more action over there and way more kids. my neighborhood is dead on halloween, no pun intended.

Halloween & grandparents
When I grew up we trick or treated by our house & didn't see our grandparents at all, but both sets lived far away at the time.
Last year was the first year that we took ds out to TOT & my parents came to our house & came with us. They live less than 10 min. away so we'll be doing this every year. My ILs live OOS so they just see pics.

Re: Halloween & grandparents
My mom lives in my neighborhood. DD 1st halloween was on a weekend so we walked over, last year I drove over there.
This year she might trick or treat a little, so if it's a warm day, we will just trick or treat over to her house.
ILs live OOS, so we skype with them sometime during the day.

Re: Halloween & grandparents
I am not big into Halloween and neither are my parents. They see pictures. So far it's always been on a weekday for us and I'm exhausted after work- no way was I driving 30 minutes so they could see her in a costume she didn't even want to be in. And my parents work so the same goes for them coming to us. Pictures are a wonderful thing.

Re: Halloween & grandparents
My mom sees pictures of her grandkids. Some are teenagers, so she's spared the shaving cream/hot pink hair pictures.
She has 8 grandchildren, so she can't be cavorting all over long island to see them. And they aren't going to drive to see her (for some it's over a 30 minute drive).
My mom gets a kick out of seeing kids in her neighborhood all dressed up. My dad helps hand out candy too.

Re: Halloween & grandparents
Growing up we always went trick or treating during the day and then drove to my grandparents house in our costume for dinner.
It was a lovely tradition that I won't be continuing.
If you want to see my DC in his/her costume, you know where to find us!

Re: Halloween & grandparents
My parents have driven from Staten Island every year since DS was born in 2007 on Halloween to go to day care parade and go trick or treating. Now that my sister is due with her first in September, this will probably change (understandably so). They won't be able to come every year.
