Re: Birthday Party with no food
I would never consider this. Its out of the question. How about a party at home? Or at the firehouse or nights of columbus? A restaurant would be fine oo, just cut back on the number of people.
Where do you live, maybe we can think of something.

Re: Birthday Party with no food
I would rather do a small party at home with immediate family only than have no food out at a hall with more guests. Your child won't remember their first birthday party - but your guests will remember if you invited them to a party with no food.

Re: Birthday Party with no food
A four hour party with no food??? That's crazy. Honestly, I am pretty sure everyone expects to be fed when invited to a party, there is no way I wouldn't serve food. I think people would be pi$$ed.

Ok ok ok!. I get the point!
I am in a hard spot since I did parties for the other two kids and had cheap places and could bring in food. Neither of those options are available now. We both have huge families so thats hard to cut down on too. We have a townhouse with no yard so thats not an option either
I don't know how to pull this off...?!

Re: Birthday Party with no food
I know this isn't a popular opinion- especially on LIF, the land of 1st birthday parties that rival my wedding- but a 1st birthday party is not a necessity.
If you can't afford it, that's ok.
There is nothing wrong with pizza and cake for IMMEDIATE family only at your house- and when I say immediate, I mean grandparents and maybe your and DH's siblings. That's it.
Your baby won't remember it or be scarred from not having a huge hoopla.
If you can't afford it, don't stress yourself out or put yourself into hock. Just mark the day in a special way and celebrate your LO with your closest family. A first birthday isn't all about a big fancy party... it's about marking the milestone and celebrating their first year- in the way that is best for you!

Re: Birthday Party with no food
Katie, heres another idea...
What about a pizza establishment or ground round by you? Theres a free standing amazing pizza place called la margherita on exit 66 sunrise hwy with a huge dining area where you can order a bunch of pizzas and what not and enjoy a party. Its usually not too busy either. Friendlys by smithhaven mall also has a back room that maybe you can do a party and pay the menu prices. Can you talk to the guy in the safari place in riverhead? You are always there, maybe he can cut a deal of some sort?

I agree with this . If you cant afford it, thats fine. Do something small at the house with immediate family with even just pizza. Or if you dont want to limit who you invite, then limit the amt of time b/c I just think it's very wrong to invite a lot of people for 4 hrs then not have food, kwim?

ITA! Honestly, I don't know anyone that looks at their siblings baby books or pictures and says "Mom why did you throw a big party for Sibling X and only had cake and pizza for me". If you can't swing it this time around, don't stress. I could see it being an issue if it was a HS grad or something when obviously kids remember, but a 1st birthday, not a big deal!

Birthday Party with no food
Can you book the hall for just like 90min-2 hours and make it very clear on the invites that it's dessert only?

Definitely need food for a 4 hour party.
I think any party should have food, at least finger food.

Maybe you can do a brunch, it's a little less expensive. Try not to stress out, you have until October, DD's Bday party is next month & I still haven't figured out most of the details but it always works out some how.

Re: Birthday Party with no food
I have to agree with other posters. If you can't afford it at the time, just have something small at your house. I had a huge Baptism party and 1st Birthday party for Shane. Gavin Baptism is going to be in July and we just can't afford a big party for him. Are families are huge, and it would cost alot of money to have a big party. So we are just having immediate family and few friends at our house after the church. I feel bad that I can't have a big party like I did for Shane, but it just not possible right now.

Re: Birthday Party with no food
For a 4 hour party, yes, it would be weird. We went to a party once and there was no food--just some chips, and then cake. DH was very mad. We hadn't eaten because there is usually food, so then he was starving, and isn't one to have cake before a meal, and isn't really a guy who can get by on a few pretzels. If you don't serve food, I would make it clear in advance so that people don't show up hungry.
ETA- for my daughter's first birthday party, we had it in our then small apartment. We had my parents, my 2 aunts, my one best friend and hubby (one other friend was invited but canceled last minute because her son was sick), and 2 of my parents friends who hadn't met DD and really wanted to. We had pizza, hummus and pita, a veggie platter, and some other food. And of course, cake. And lots of balloons. I know this is a really small party, but in all the first bday parties I have been to, I have never seen the baby enjoy a party more. She opened her presents as she got them. Played with the balloons. Got attention from everyone and was the real focus of the party. I was very pregnant with my second at the time, and didn't have the time, money or stamina for an elaborate party, and honestly, as it turned out, it couldn't have been better.

Re: Birthday Party with no food
I would opt for a hall that was a little more $$ but allows you to bring in food. Then you can do cheaper food like hero's and salads, etc. Or even pizzas and snacks.
What about the Polish Hall? Are there and K of C out by you?

I would definitely check out parks. There will probably be a fee, and you may have to use their catering or bring the food in yourself, but it should still be cheaper in the long run.

Guess I have to keep looking. The Polish Hall is the one that would be $900 with minimum food. Tried a few other halls, but will try to find a K of C, I don't know where one is.

I have discussed it with MIL and it doesn't seem like she wants to have it at her house.

Does it have to be out by you? What about HI in Ronk? Do you still know anyone there that might give you a good price?

Re: Birthday Party with no food
How about a park? You can probably rent a picnic shelter, do some cute outdoor games for the kids, BBQ etc. I know I've been to them here in NC ...hang on I'll do soem research for you.
Edited because thought this was summer. May not work with october weather.
