teachers: keep trying or postpone?

so AF came today; this was our first time trying. we've been going back and forth about whether to try again this cycle or to put it off until spring/summer of 2010 because of maternity leave. i checked one of those cycle calculator things, and it said my baby's due date would be around 5/28/2010 if i got pregnant in september, which means i would go back to school when the baby is 3 months. i wouldn't get the chance to take longer without pay unless i was willing to go all the way until february (can't afford that), and i wouldn't get to connect my 6 weeks of leave to the full summer because of overlap. i know lots of girls just get the 6-12 weeks, but teaching is so consuming during the school year, i'm scared to set myself up for going back before the baby's even sleeping through the night, kwim? thoughts?

Personally, I am going to keep trying. I actually can't try right now because I just had a m/c. I will probably (hopefully) be able to try again in October. If I actually got PG that cycle, I would end up with a July baby, which isn't my ideal timing. In that case, I think I would go back right after the December holiday break.

My reasoning is that I have learned that we have no control over this situation...no matter how hard we try, things don't always work out the way we planned, so I am just gonna keep going and keep my fingers crossed that it works out.

Just out of curiousity, is there a reason that you'd have to wait until Feb. break to go back? Is January not an option?

I'm in the same position as you!! I was thinking the same thing. However, I really dont know how long this will take so therefore, we wont stop trying. If you postpone till next spring/summer...it may not happen for another few months..it just stinks that we can predict what will happen.

If i was to get prego and b due in june...i would be off for july/august. I would save like crazy (the mortgage) so that I would be able to stay home till nov/dec.

Just like the other person wrote ..why is it february that u have to go back?? cant u go back at any time?? honestly im really confused with fmla ..guess when the time comes ill figure it all out

I wouldn't wait. What happens if in 2010 you don't hit that spring/summer due date? Will you then wait until 2011?

I had DD in Jan 2008 and went back to work in May. It was tough but I survived. Having a child is going to take a toll on your teaching no matter when you have it. My DD was 7 months when I started back last sept and even though she was older it still took a lot out of me. Plus there is no guarentee that your child will sleep though the night by a certain age. I have friends who have DC's 1+ that still don't do it.

I have a June '08 baby and loved having her at that time of the year. We had saved up so I am only going back now (she is over 14 months old) and know that I am fortunate! If you had a May/June baby, why couldn't you use sick days until the end of the year in conjunction with FMLA, then since you have used about 2-4 weeks of it (b/c you may deliver a week or two late esp. if this is your first child), stay out another 2 months or so in Sept.-Oct. to finish off your FMLA?

That is the saying for sure. I am not a teacher but was talking to a friend about ttc for a certain time and she at me. She said ok, tell me how you feel about that after the first time you try to do that. I was trying to plan around when my mom is off (she is a teacher in NY & we will be living in VA) so I thought it would be nice to be due in May or June so she could come stay during the summer. Then BIL is getting married in August and I was debating having a newborn, or being about to give birth pregnant. DH brought me back to reality, he said we can't plan for anything in life, so we shouldn't try. He said whatever happens will happen, and we will figure it out when it does. That has kinda grounded me with the whole process. I feel like if we try to plan when the to have the baby, there will never be a good time. There will always be something else going on in our family, lives, work, etc.. So we are throwing caution to the wind. Believe it is hard as hell b/c I like to plan, it is what I do.

I am not a teacher, but I don't think you should wait. Keep trying. You never know how long it will take and quite honestly, who cares?!?!? When you see your new baby you wont care if you are missing school or not!

personally I think you should keep trying. When it happens it happens...its hard to plan exactly what month you'll get pregnant

I'm a teacher.... we are going to start soon but I am not concerned with due dates at this point... It's anyone's guess how long it will take to get pregnant, and I am most worried about THAT! I wouldn't want to put it off and then find I couldn't get pregnant for several months anyway.....

I am going to keep trying. If I got pregnant this month I would be due around May 28th. If i dont get pregnant this month, I will just take my 6 weeks in September and not go back til mid October. I dont want to take a break from trying because who knows how long it will take for me.

yeah, this kind of stuff is so hard for teachers b/c we like to plan and have control.
