Re: New AAP Guidelines
So what happened to babies need whole milk because it's know that "fat" is good for brain development?
So NOW we have to watch kids diet at 6 months.
This is such BS.
Kids needs fat to develop. They just need "good" fat.
Instead of reducing milk to 2% maybe they should tell parents whose kids on the higher weight percentile NOT to give juice or french fries or icecream or do it in moderation.

Re: New AAP Guidelines
They're guidelines, not laws written in stone.
Madelyn is 22 months- she'll probably stay on whole (soy)milk for awhile because she's so skinny and needs the fat. Eliza is in the 95th% and if she stays that way, she'll get 2% when the time comes.
The rest of the stuff I'll discuss with my ped and allergist and see what they recommend.

Re: New AAP Guidelines
Very interesting, thanks for posting!
It's funny because SIL is a ped upstate and her entire practice does 2% milk, unless the child is dangerously low on the charts. She was absolutely shocked that DD was on whole milk.
PB thing - I have given her tastes her and there, but haven't actually given her a PB&J sandwich yet.

I think they dont know how to combat childhood obesity so they came up with this and its absurd.
How about the FCC places limits on Advestising during childrens TV shows like it did back in the 70'S AND 80'S when kids weren't bombarded with snack commercials during every TV show so they pick up an apple vs a dorito or introducing back to nature programs to get kids to excercise more....OR groups to help parents learn how to serve healthy meals to their kids vs. Mcdonalds.
I just get more and more frustrated with all these agencies and their nonsense!!

Yes, they are not Laws but PEDs do follow the guidelines of the AAP.
So you will see PEDS starting telling you to give 2% milk when they are 1.

I think promoting an apple vs. doritos is a better way to approach obesity. Same with exercise. I think nutrition has to be taugth. What has vitamins and minerals. What is good for your body.
DS is on the bigger side. He is proportioned to his heigth. I just watch the food choices. I don't give him juice. It's emply calories. I open the back door and we go and run in the backyard. If he was on the lower percentile, I may not watch. But kids still need fat to develop.

You know what? I think we all have enough common sense to do the right thing for OUR children as individuals. I love how they lump all children into these blanket statements. Can't be done, all kids are different and have specific needs. If you're paying attention and have 1/2 a brain you'll do just fine. Trust me. I seriously think they just have no clue and spin a giant wheel of chance before making these "guidelines".
My grandmother says:
All doctors graduate with two jugs, one empty and one full of theories. As the years pass the theories go from the full one to the empty one. Once they have all crossed over the doctor retires. And the next doctor starts going back the other way.
It's so true.

Re: New AAP Guidelines
I honestly think the car seat thing needs to be by weight and height... not age as a general rule of thumb. My DD is still rear facing and she always is trying sit up - so her head is off the seat. As someone who recently got rear ended I can say her head would hit the seat hard first then fly "forwad". She'd be better off forward facing if she's going to sit with her head forward I think.
Second - the milk - I too think it should be based on the specific child. If the child is gaining too much weight then change THAT child to 2%, 1% or skim. For kids in the normal weight range I say keep them at full fat milk.
Toddlers and older infants become VERY picky sometimes with eating... I know if it weren't for whole milk somedays my DD would not get her full caloric needs met. Little one's crawl/run around and play and nap (which is good for the metabolism). Again, if we are talking couch potato toddler who sits there eating potato chips while watching TV all day and is gaining too much weight and never spits food out or throws it on the floor/gives to the family pet - then by all means - put the kid on weight watchers - but I have yet to meet such a child under 3. What's next - Baby Adkins?
My only "concern" with peanut butter is that at her age if she has a reaction, she may not be able to say "mommy I can't breath well" so by the time we see a problem it could be too late - no? That's my reasoning... but I may ask at what age my mom introduced it to me since I have no history nor does DH of such an allergy. Shell fish I just think would be a strange taste for a little one.

I so agree -and while we are limiting targeting kids in advertising...
Let's add the brilliance on Madison Ave that came up with stuffing square blocks in the A S S E S of WOMEN to advertise Spunge Bob toys at Blubber King (I mean Burger King). But don't get me started on how corp america sells sex to children these days too. And we wonder why they are obese and having sex at 10???? Sorry, maybe it's the former psych major in me - but I was very annoyed with the Burger King commercial when I saw it.

But turning them forward is primarily about age, not weight or height. It's about the maturity and strength of the neck muscles. A very overweight baby is not better prepared to sit forward facing just because they weigh more. If anything, it could be the opposite.
Car seats need to be designed differently to accommodate more DC being able to stay rear-facing for longer.
