I think its because it satisfies the "saints name" criteria.
I am Anne, my sister is Marie.
Interesting. My mother was born in another country where it is tradition to name a child after the saint whose day is closest to the day the child is born. My middle name is my mother's name, and she is named for a saint whose day is the day before she was born.

In my family we have an Ann, Marie, and Elizabeth. I think Lynn and Jean are common as well.

Still the same percentage, even with well over 100 entries.
However, not many people have Ann or Marie as their first names. According to the Social Security site: http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/
Ann was the 731st most popular name in 2006.
Anne was 460.
Marie was 578.
If you do a longer history, though, you'll see that 30-40 years ago, the names were much more popular.

LOL..not the case for me, b/c I'm Jewish and my middle name is Ann. My middle name is after my mom's Aunt Ann.
