Re: Hicksville?
Its a nice town - lots of shops (broadway mall), so the taxes are very low compared to the area.
The SD is ok, imo. Not great, but not the worst either.

Re: Hicksville?
I grew up in Plainview (very near the border of Hicksville) but always attended Catholic school in Hicksville in the late 70's through 1988. Most of my childhood friends were from the area.
JMO, and through observation over the years, it's not the area it once was and yes, while the SD is not the worst, it's not the best... there is a significant transient population in the district.
If I knew someone who was considering the area, I would stear them in the area near the border of Syosset.

I agree.
My friend teaches in the HS, and while it is good, its not great. I do love that there's a significant amount of diversity there than in most LI towns, but at the same time, it doesn't really have that 'community' feel to me because it is on the larger side, and like Theresa said, the transient population... (there are alot of rentals in the area; main LIRR hub, etc...)
i wouldn't be against moving there though... its very middle class, and i like that aspect of it.
But, the one thing i did notice (which was kind of weird to me).. we looked at a few houses in that area along Jerusalem, and it seemed that no matter how large the house looked from the outside, or even just a standard cape like you see in every town- the individual rooms All seemed so small. i don't know if anyone else noticed this, but we saw a whole bunch of houses, and this was the issue with all of them.

Neenie,
I agree. I think it might be a Nassau thing or the builder for most of that area.
My Dad's house is like that and many of my friends' houses were like that unless they knocked down walls between rooms, expanded out, etc.
Standards for houses in the 50's (when most of that area was built) were so much different. So many of the original homeowners were apt. dwellers from Brooklyn or Queens so to them these houses were mansions

Re: Hicksville?
We had an apartment in a house right by Old Country Road and South Oyster Bay Road. It's a really nice area and the neighbors have all been there forever.

We had an apartment off of old country road & woodbury road which was a nightmare, but our neighbors were nice.

Re: Hicksville?
I used to live in the "college" streets aka Hillside Terrace which is between Old Country and Woodbury Rds. west of So. Oyster Bay. I thought that area, the area on the north side of Woodbury and the area over by New South Road were the nicest. If you go into the Broadway section, you are looking at the rental area and not such a nice neighborhood IMO. I still work in Hicksville and although a lot of businesses are there a long time, there is a lot of change in the type of businesses and in the community.

My grandmother lives over there and its a nice area...if I was going to buy in Hicksville (and that was one of the towns we were looking in) that is the area I wanted to buy in.

Re: Hicksville?
I live in Hicksville and love it.
DH works in the City and we live 1.5 miles from the train station.
Schools are good, taxes are good.
Yes, rooms are on the smaller size (levits type houses) but I love our location. We have a corner house so we have a big lot (for Nassau's standard).
We are close to Hempstead Tpk, LIE, NSP, malls, 10 minutes from Hospitals (Plainview or Bethpage). 15-20 minutes from Garden City/Mineola.
