18 month old throwing himself on floor
This has actually been happening for a few months now. If you yell at him or even speak the word no to him he throws himself on the floor. If he's holding something in his hand he will throw it. If you are near him he will hit you.
I either ignore it or I tell him to get up (rather than pick him up) and pick up what he threw.
This kid has gotten more time outs in his life than my 3.5 year old lol
I feel like right after the time out, it was effective bc he understands hes in trouble (bc he always cries in timeout) and then he will give me a hug after and pick up the item if he threw something or hug his sister if he hit her.
Basically hes a super sweet kid until you tell him no and then he throws a hitting and throwing fit.
Any advice on what to do to make sure this kid doesnt turn out to be an asshole? hahah

Yup totally normal! It's their way of expressing frustration until they can fully use their words.

Re: 18 month old throwing himself on floor
DS is 17 mos tomorrow and you just perfectly described him. Say no and he gets down on the floor or leans against the wall with his arms over his eyes. He's kind of a drama queen.
Throws everything in sight and hits. We yell at him. No time outs yet bc I feel like he wouldn't understand but DH mentioned it recently.
I agree that it's frustration bc they can't communicate yet. I was putting him to sleep tonight and he was babbling up a storm, complete with hand gestures and finger pointing. Lol. I was like I know you're having a conversation with me but we're not quite there yet, but soon.

To original poster your 18 month sounds totally normal.
As for time outs, they totally understand. I started making DS sit on the step around 18 months anytime he hit or threw something at us. Only a few seconds but he understood and to this day he is 26 months anytime he starts acting a little nutty I just say do you want to sit on the step and he calms down.
I agree it is a total communication issue.

Re: 18 month old throwing himself on floor
Normal. My 19 month old was doing it for a while. I ignored it and she stopped. Once in a while she still does it. I say, "You want to throw a tantrum, ok, go ahead." I just make sure she's not in a place she can get hurt (i.e. top of stairs). I'll put her some place soft and let her cry. Eventually it stops.

The first time my son did this it was the funniest thing in the world. He started crying and bawling. Then he stopped looked around at everything on the floor, cautiously laid himself down so he did not get hurt and proceeded to continue his tantrum. It was quite comical.
I think it is totally normal for the age.
