Is it ok to donate hand me downs you don't plan to use?

My older kids are 5 and 7 so most of our friends are done having kids. I have received a ridiculous amount of hand me downs - gear, toys and clothes. Half the stuff we can use. Half the stuff we probably won't use.

Is it ok to donate?
Should I offer to give items back?

Like I don't need my friend's old high chair or breast pump.

Call them and ask.
They should be able to donate if you don't need the items.
I give items away if I know someone who needs them directly... but I take the donation and tax write off if I don't.

I told whimever I gave the items to. That If they don't want them to give them away, sell them whatever they wanted. There was nothing I wanted back.

Are the people who gave you the stuff having more kids? If not I can't imagine they would need baby gear back.

I gave by my bff a bunch of stuff and she keeps telling me she'll "keep it in good condition in case there's an oops." I told her she can set it on fire for all I care, and if I end up pregnant again the least of my worries is an out of date mamaroo.

Well they probably wanted to get rid of it anyway. Once they gave it to you, I think you can do whatever you want with it, whether you use it, donate it, or toss it.

I always do and when I give handle downs I always ask my friends to pass things on or donate them if they are not going to use them.

Ask the friends. I told my cousins I want the stuff back
If they were planning to donate as we weren't done having kids.

I would decline in the first place if I did not need it. And stuff I did need, I make sure to clarify whether the person is giving it to me or wants it back eventually.

So, I would call the person who gave it to you and ask what they want you to do- return it to them or donate.

This last round of gear was given to my DH. I don't think DH looked at what was being put in the car. People also give me boxes and I don't open it until I get home. Now we have way too much stuff.

We have way more than what we originally had with our 2 boys. We used to live in Manhattan so we didn't have a ton of stuff. We live in the suburbs now so people just have more stuff.

When I give hand me downs, I specify that I don't want them back. Most of the people who have given me things have specified the same.

For larger items - I have double checked before passing them along (someone had given us a firetruck toddler bed).

I guess ask. I get hand me down clothe but I made it clear if they wanted anything back while I appreciate the offer to not give it to me because I didn't want to have to remember who gave me what clothes.

I got a couple bigger items from friends where they told me to keep them or I asked if I could borrow and then returned it when I was done.

Re: Is it ok to donate hand me downs you don't plan to use?

I was given some hand me down toys by someone whose daughter is done having children. They were mainly infant toys which my DS never used and I still had them sitting in the bag from when she gave them to me. We moved recently and in my effort to clear stuff out we don't need, I offered them to a friend who gladly took them.

I figured if we never used it with my DS we certainly won't with our next. Never even occurred to me to offer them back.

Re: Is it ok to donate hand me downs you don't plan to use?

Most of my hand me downs have been given to me with a stern "I never want to see this again". What I don't use or is still good after I use I will try to pay forward (if I end up selling maybe get a bottle of wine or two to share with the original person lol). A few things I have lent out I would like back if it is still in good condition, I am most likely done having children but my sisters are not and I would like to be able to offer things to them when the time comes, but I tell people that when I lend them things.
