Hand me downs...thoughts?
We haven't been offered any, I think it is because we don't know the sex. But I have gone by garage sales in great neighborhoods, and purchased onsies and pjs that look and feel brand new.
I also want to purchase a second carseat from craigs list, as well as yard toys and such.
I am not trying to be a penny pincher, just trying to be wise.
BIL seemed shocked that we were doing this, which is weird since his kids have been in daycare since they were infants..aren't things shared there?
My mother also seemed skeeved that I bought used onsies. I will wash in crazy hot water and they came from a gorgeous home...
I won't mind if you are against it, I only want to do what is right. tia!

neither do I!! Don't listen to people do what is best for you. My sisters son is a few months older then mine and she gives us her son's clothes when he outgrows them. It has been so great.. we saved a lot of money and my nephews clothes didn't go to waste. Lucky for me my sister has great taste

Re: Hand me downs...thoughts?
The only thing I would be cautious of and never buy used is a car seat. I've always been told never to buy a used car seat as you don't know the history or it use. From what I understand, if you are in an accident it is recommended to replace your carset since it may not be as safe. So I would not buy a used car seat.

Re: Hand me downs...thoughts?
thanks!! I will scratch the carseat off the used list. I thought I would luck out with a Britax for a great price, but it isn't worth it if not recommended.

Re: Hand me downs...thoughts?
My nephew is 4 months older than my Ds and I was so appreciative of all the cloths that my SIL gave me including the maternity cloths. I plan to pass on to someone all of DS's cloths once I know we are done with kids. His cloths are in really good shape I guess because he has so much that he doesnt wear everything so much. I don't see anything wrong with accepting hand me downs. I think people forget sometimes how expensive babies are and even if things are inexpensive it does eventually add up when you buy it new.

Re: Hand me downs...thoughts?
As far as clothes we really haven't used much in the way of handmedowns. My friend gave us some stuff but she had her daughter about 3 years ago and I just wasn't crazy about most of the stuff. We get so many gifts of clothing and baby clothes are so cheap so we really haven't needed to go that route anyway.
However I have picked up some toys at yard sales. I got a piano for $2 -- a basic one like we had for my sister -- no electricity just a little toy piano, cleaned it up, and she loves it. We also got one of those big octagonal gates for the backyard and a Leap Frog shopping cart that was brand new still in the box unopened for $5 each.
Our crib was a handmedown from a friend of the family and was a $1000 Bellini crib that he sold us for $100 because he wanted to free up the space in his house and knew they weren't having kids anymore.
I say if you can find stuff that is in good condition why not!!

Re: Hand me downs...thoughts?
With my first I wanted everything brand new. Next time around I will check out craigs list or maybe a garage sale before I go off to BBB or BRU. I realize the amount of time baby stuff is used is very short so it's not like the stuff is worn out.
I think w/ clothes as long as they look good you can wash them (a few times if it makes you feel better) and they will be fine.

Re: Hand me downs...thoughts?
IMO hand me downs are the way to go. It kills me that people spent so much money on stuff for my baby shower. That's why I gave my things to people who could use them. I hated the idea of wasting them.
Think about baby clothes - they are used for maximum THREE months for the first year. SIX months for the next year.

Re: Hand me downs...thoughts?
I've accepted tons of hand me downs for my two girls, and I have bought from garage sales. I always wash them in the sanitary setting on the w/d. It seriously saved me hundreds of dollars on clothes, and if anyone offered me boys clothes this time I'd take them in a second!

Re: Hand me downs...thoughts?
I went to a lot of yard sales before Caiden came. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. We only got great looking stuff with no stains. I look at it as, if someone else buys it for it, fine, but why spend all that money if they're only going to wear it for a few weeks! If you have the money for new, that's great as well. You can just get some great deals at yard sales on all baby and kid stuff. Anything I buy from them are usually new with tags or like new condition. Have fun!

Re: Hand me downs...thoughts?
The only thing I would be careful on is the car seat because if the car was in any kind of accident you aren't supposed to use the car seat anymore and I'm not sure a seller would disclose that. As far as clothes I got hand me downs, new and clothes at thrift shops. I just washed everything before using it. I think you're being smart!

Re: Hand me downs...thoughts?
I think hand-me-downs and buying at garage sales is quite thrifty. If the clothing is in good condition, what's the difference? If you had good clothing that you wanted someone else to have, wouldn't you be offended if someone didn't accept your clothing because they thought it was "skeevy"?
We need to get off our high horses sometimes and appreciate that the clothing is in great condition and we have people that can use it. Kids grow out of their stuff so fast, there is no reason for it not to be recycled to other kids who can use it. Happy Shopping!

Me neither. I took hand me down swing and bouncy seat and glad I did. DD hardly uses her swing, and i couldn't see spending 140 bucks on one. My mom was shocked too, but I politely told her to stick it.
Just be careful with the used car seat. Make sure you do your homework on recalls, safety changes, and how old the seat is. Also make sure the carseat has never been in accident. Safety standards change, and manufacturers are always making something better.

We're not pregnant, but when we eventually are, my BIL and SIL saved all their stuff for us. Bassinet, clothes, car seat, crib and they are immaculate. I think it's a great idea. I just wouldn't want items that are stained...that's gross. Nothing wrong with hand me downs so long as they are clean. The kids/babies grow so fast, it's hard to keep up

Re: Hand me downs...thoughts?
I would take anything hand-me-down except for the car seat, crib mattress, changing pad or a crib older than 4 years. Of course, anything I do receive will have to be in great condition.
I bought a huge box of name-brand clothing in excellent condition from a craigslist seller for my baby niece. Everything was the right size and season because the seller's daughter and my niece were born in December, one year apart. My sister was so grateful! She promised to hand them off to me for my baby girl due this December!

Hand me downs and gently used items are great! It saves so much money! We are getting a bunch of stuff from a friend of mine who just had a baby. We're not going to say no to any. If we happen not to like it we'll just donate it.

Re: Hand me downs...thoughts?
Never buy a 2nd hand car seat unless you personally know the seller. if the seat was in an accident, even a minor one, it could be damaged. You can't always see the damage. It could have weakened the supports or something. That is dangerous IMO. It might also not be up to date on safety standards if it is older than advertisesd. I would never take a 2nd hand mattress from someone I didn't know personally either. Also, NEVER buy a used breast pump from someone who you don't know VERY well. Disease can be passed thru them into your baby's milk, this includes HIV..not worth the money you save IMO. Clothing is fine, of course. Diaper bags, toys (especially the kind you can power wash for outdoors)...all of that stuff is great IMO. But when safety is an issue I don't care how much I will save.

Re: Hand me downs...thoughts?
I never even have to buy clothes for my two year old. My sil gives me all hers. I have so many clothes I feel bad when he can't wear them all in a season. Do not feel bad about garage sale finds. You will come to find out when your little one is here they only wear things for a very short period, B/C thay grow so fast.

The other great thing about hand me down clothes is they have been washed so much they are pretty clear of all the chemicals that go into making them
