Hand Me Downs

So a friend of a friend gave me a whole bunch of stuff yesterday ( an entire garbage bag full of clothes) and I know her other good friend is having a baby boy a week before me, so I said, doesn't so and so want some of those clothes? My friend said "you wouldn't believe how many people do not want hand me downs." I was shocked. I mean, of course I want some new stuff, but I am not going to look a gift horse in the mouth!!!!!! I would rather take the money I would have spent it on and put it away for college.

What do you guys think? Am I just cheap?

Re: Hand Me Downs

No! Baby clothes last about a minute before they are outgrown and are expensive! I am welcoming all hand me downs!

My sister-in-laws have given me a handful of really nice clothes, a lot with tags on that they never even used. I except everything I can get being the baby's grow so quickly.

I welcome ALL hand me downs!

We wash all new clothes anyway, how difficult is it to throw in a few clothes that were free? Chat Icon

Besides, kids just don't last in clothes for long when they are so little. Less I have to buy the better!

DS is over a year old and I haven't had to actually buy him clothes due to the generous gifts and the hand me downs that one of my best friends has given me.

I just shipped a 22lb box to my SIL for her baby boy on the way and that was just clothes through 3-6!!Chat Icon

I love hand me downs!!! Especially for babies..they grow so quickly!!!!

But Im not surprised to hear that someone wouldnt want any...through my years as a parent I have been given bags of stuff from people who were all too happy to get rid of them...Ive asked what you did.."dont you want to give them to SIL/Friend/ETC"..they all answered NO b/c so and so doesnt want any hand me downs..

To each his own!!!

With all these kids of mine I gladly accept hand me downs from anyone who wants to pass them my way..

Re: Hand Me Downs

To me, anything I don't have to shell out for clothes is that much more in Ed-lie's 529. Unless the hand me downs have stains on them or are just butt ugly, I'd gladly take generous offers.

Re: Hand Me Downs

I just found out I am preggers and am already thinking about all the stuff I can get for free!

My friend who already has a child also told me she would go with me when the time comes to put things I actually will use on my registry.

I drove past a yard sale earlier today and saw a rocking chair in the yard for sale..........I was so tempted to stop.........

No hand me downs are awesome. As long as they are in good shape.

Re: Hand Me Downs

I was never offered any Chat Icon

I would take them though! (I'd of course weed out the worn out and stained stuff, if there was any)
'
I will say, though, that not all hand-me-downs are useful... if Crouton is 9 mo in the summer, 9 mo hand me downs that are winter weight are sort of useless....

but the medium weight / pj type stuff is always useful!

since we've had no offers, I've been buying basics bit by bit when I see them.... every item on steep clearance (50% or more), since they last for such short periods of time.....
