Has anyone considered moving out of the country?

I see all these posts about how Trump and anyone who supports him is a racist, misogynist, bigot.... I am just curious since roughly half of the country did and still do support Trump, do you feel like perhaps this is not the nation you want to be a part of anymore?

Personally I don't believe that Trump is any of those things and so clearly I don't think his supporters are any of those things just for the sole fact that they supported him. But if I did in my heart believe that roughly half of the country were a bunch of bigoted racists, I think I would seriously consider giving up my citizenship and moving elsewhere. I am just curious if anyone has seriously considered it given the big eye opener that this election has been for a lot of people.

on NPR i heard a story of how new zealand has had an incredible uptake on their national website and and incredible uptake on people who have officially inquired about moving there.

for many years, i've dreamed of living in europe/UK.
my desire to live in europe is not connected to the election outcome, i just have romanticized ideas of living in a small town in europe... lol then again, i dream of small town living here, as well.



that being said, i DO believe that there is a good percentage of people in this country who are bigoted, racist, and misogynists. not because they voted for Trump, but because i see it and hear it and feel it every single day at work. i believe that THOSE people (NOT all of trump's supporters) believe that they now can say publicly what they have been saying privately because of the outlandish things that trump said/did during the campaign. my fear of them is not new because of the election.

Feelings for Trump aside, I don't think I would move out of this country. Such a culture shock. We're considering moving to MA and that's change enough!!

Please I can barely bring myself to move out of state- as much as I hate living on LI.
I could NEVER move out of the country.
I get nervous enough just TRAVELLING out of the country.

I have. My parents were immigrants. They came here from Colombia, South America in the early 1970s. I was born in NYC. They did eventually become citizens and homeowners through hard work and low paying manual labor jobs all to give me the opportunity of a better life.

Since both my parents have dual citizenship, and my grandmother still lives in South America - I've already told my parents I will move down and live w/ my grandmother if the situation under Trump gets worse (ie he starts deporting second gen immigrants, or enacts crazy racist laws ala Nuremberg style like Hitler did in the 1930s). If I see any of that, I am likely to pick up and GTFO. Seriously.

I've been looking into dual citizenship and which countries we could easily move to based on our heritage, just in case. It's not something I would do tomorrow or anything, but if things start to go downhill at least I'll have a plan.

Roughly half of voters for Trump and half voted for Clinton.

This is MY country, so no I would not consider moving.

Is that what Trump supporters want for people to move?

I don't know. I haven't heard that but I don't really talk people about politics in real life so I only know what I read on here.

Statistically speaking I think that 50% of the population is a pretty good sample size to determine that roughly half of the country is pro-Trump. And the other half is pro-Clinton.

If DH and I didn't have kids and things got as bad as I fear they will, yes we would have.

It's moot though because we have too many ties - children, real estate, elderly parents, etc.

But, yes, in an alternate universe we'd take a wait and see approach and then look into options. Not sure where - somewhere in the EU probably. Germany, maybe. It would be for other reasons in addition to Trump, but he - or I should say, the America he creates - would definitely be the tipping point.

To address your first point, I won't say that I think that all Trump voters are bigots etc. I won't paint them all with the same brush. I do, unfortunately, think that many of them are, mostly based on other things they have said and done - overt racism, aggression towards women, willful dismissal of the concept of privilege, etc. I reserve judgment when I don't see those accompanying behaviors.

To go back to your first point, it is those people that I do judge as racists that make me feel like they are part of an America that I would not care to live in. However, it's my country too, and even in that alternative universe I described, I'd still work my damnedest to change it before I just left it.

No, but I also wouldn't move out of the NYC area, either. Mostly because I prefer living in a more diverse though left leaning area.

My kids & I have dual citizenship (not DH though) so I could but at the moment I have no desire to. I'm not worried about Trump becoming president so it would have nothing to do with that. I feel like we've been in the crapper as a nation for a while now but would I really be better off anywhere else? I'm not so sure. Our jobs are here, our home is here, our family is here, our life is here... so I'm not going anywhere any time soon. It would take a lot for us to leave the country... we considered moving to a different county within the state & even that seems overwhelming!

A lot of Trump supporters I know have posted that kind of negativity on fb, as a matter of fact that was the first thing they posted as soon as the results came in on election night. On my newsfeed at least it was rampant. Again, it happens every election.

I'm from Colombia, came here 15 years ago and have now dual citizenship. I don't like Trump, but it would never be a reason for me to move back. DH is from here, DS was born here, our lives are here. I'm not afraid of whatever is going to happen, maybe I'm naive or maybe I'm hopeful. Colombia has lots of its own problems for me to consider moving back there. I just hope my answer remains the same in a couple of years....

This election was the first time I considered it. I am still processing the results of the election but at the moment I cant help but feel disgusted by our country. I definitely dont think we are the best nation in the world, it feels like we are a country of ignorant and apathetic hateful bigots with terrible healthcare and maternity policies and an obscene amount of gun violence with an unwillingness to do anything about it etc. I have a number of friends who have moved to Europe or Canada in the past 5 years (mostly for their jobs or their spouse's jobs) and things seem to be pretty great over there. Our jobs are based here, and our families are all in the US, but it's really tempting. I have worried for years that my fear of change is putting my family at risk because of gun violence and other issues we have here. In reality I am unlikely to make the move but I feel like if the right opportunity arose I am much more likely to make the move now than I was previously.

Question- can you just decide to move to another country permanently?
Do you need a work visa? How long can you stay?
Do you apply for citizenship eventually? Can you?

I was just wondering how that would work.
