Very unhappy with scheduled csection start time

Was anyone else very unhappy with their csection time? I am scheduled at 5:30pm, the last one of the day. Apparently it's a radomn lottery and there is nothing they can do about it? Even if I try to change it to the day before or after, the best they could do is maybe 2:30pm.

Meanwhile how am I not supposed to eat from midnite the night before until 5:30pm? And I will get to sit and wait all day anxious about it.

Anyone else have a late scheduled csection time can shed some positiveness on the situation bc as of now I am just so upset.

Re: Very unhappy with scheduled csection start time

My 2nd DD was born via scheduled c/s at 5:30pm. The surgery was scheduled for 3:45pm, as I recall, then was bumped back for a couple of reasons.

Anyway, yeah, I wasn't happy mostly because I had tremendous anxiety about the surgery. I begged my doctor and she said I could eat dry toast if I got up at 6 or 7am...which I did. The rest of the day I literally gargled flavored seltzer and spit it out Chat Icon Positive spin: I had plenty of time to get my hair blown out at the salon and do my makeup!

But, in the end, you know what...who cares (and I'm saying this with the warmest intentions!)...the time of your c-section will fade into memories with no lasting consequence. I laugh at the thought of me with my seltzer now.

Good luck...it will be FINE! Chat Icon

My c section (unplanned) was at 5pm. I think a positive for me was no unwanted visitors after. It was late by the time I got to my room ( I was in recovery for a few hours) so only the grand parents were there and they only stayed for a short time... I was absolutely exhausted and just wanted to relax and bond with DS and DH, that's why it was a plus. That said, the kitchen closed by the time I got up (10ish), so they couldn't order me a meal and I was starving. My DH was able to run down to Au Bon Pain and get me something though.

Re: Very unhappy with scheduled csection start time

My first c/s was first thing in the morning 8am! It was perfect.

My second was scheduled for 1pm but kept getting bumped and Ds wasnt delivered until after 8pm! I wont lie the no food thing was hard. I woke up at 5am hungry so I had something small. When they called me at home and told me not to come to the hospital at my original time I asked if I could have anythign and I was told just water.

Dont watch afternoon TV, every other commercial had to do with food!! LOL
When I got to the hospital and they hooked me up to the IVs my son went crazy! He was probably starving too!

But we made it. I was know on the floor as that poor woman who hadnt eating in SOOO long!

If you need to eat, have something light and small. Ask your OB and they may be able to give you and adjusted time on when to stop eating!

My c-section was the same time... I actually did have a bagel in the morning and some jello in the afternoon.

Very unhappy with scheduled csection start time

When I was being induced with DD1, as long as I was getting pitocin, I couldn't eat. My induction was 65 hours long and I couldn't eat for about 30 of those hours with the exception of ice chips. My blood sugar ended up dropping so they gave me apple juice. Man did I savor it as long as I could lol. When being induced with DD2, I was allowed clear foods and liquids- jello, ices, clear juices. It was much better. I definitely didn't have to fast for as long as you will have to from the time I was told I needed a CS to the time I got it so maybe they'll let you at least have that? It might be worth asking about.

I would definitely ask about eating. You should be able to eat breakfast at least. I had surgery in the fall for a splinter in my finger (full blown surgery on a gurney, etc.ha!) and they said no eating past midnight also, and my surgery was scheduled for like 2pm. I was ticked off, and ate breakfast at around 7am anyway. I can see if the surgery was in the morning, but late afternoon, c'mon!

Re: Very unhappy with scheduled csection start time

My scheduled C was also the last one of the day. I was not happy about that but got some luck. Day before my scheduled c the doctor office called that they moved me to 10AM instead of last. Said that's great but how come and they said the first scheduled c went into labor esrly so I got her spot instead of moving everyone else around. They just moved last to first. Hopefully that happens to you.

Goid luck!!

See if an earlier spot opens up. I was a nervous wreck because there was no OR availability the ENTIRE week I was supposed to deliver. Everyone said "well, someone has to deliver early." Finally a 10am slot opened so I took it.

Then I went into labor. And I delivered early. So, someone got my spot!

I was scheduled for 3 pm. Not ideal for me especially with GD and other underlying issues. I was told nothing after midnight and they did not relent.

A positive---You should sleep in---as late as you can. Have a lazy morning in bed. There won't be many after that. Then I went and got my hair done and nails done as a way to pass the time in the morning. You will have to arrive at the hospital at least an hour early if not more. I agree---no TV. It will make you hungry! It was nice to have that first night quiet without many visitors.

You can ask to be notified if earlier times open up as well.

Usually when you have a late c-section they let you eat 12 hours before, maybe even 8 hours before. So you could wake up early and eat a breakfast.

I had the same anxiety. With DD, I was scheduled for 4:30pm. I asked them to change it and it was pushed back 3 days and I think I got something around 1pm. To me, that was better. But the truth was, even if they didn't change it, it would've been one day that sucked. But I was just hoping I would've been so preoccupied with being excited to have a baby later that day that I would've been ok.

Meantime, DD had other plans and I went into labor 15 days early. So all my worrying didn't matter.

Re: Very unhappy with scheduled csection start time

In all honesty, even if you're the FIRST scheduled C section of the day, you can get bumped and end up waiting houirs for an OR to open up due to emergeicies etc.

It's not ideal, but in the grand scheme of things, there's no point in making yourself sick over something that you have no control over.
It's just a few extra hours.........and then you'll have a BABY !! Chat Icon Chat Icon

With my first, was in labor all day and FINALLY had a c section. They wheeled me in at 11:30 pm ........and I had that little man to myself the whole night, in a quiet hospital without 900 people on top of me.

My second I was scheduled for 7:30 am, had him at 9 ish .........and the experience wasn't the same. I missed that 'night time' to myself with him. I was really disappointed.

Just a different perspective

Good Luck!

Re: Very unhappy with scheduled csection start time

My second c-section was scheduled for 9:30am on a Friday, I ended up having some complications and had to have him a week earlier at 10:30 pm. I had the ENTIRE recovery room and attention of the nurses all to myself, it was kind of nice. Plus, DH and I got to have a TON of alone time with the baby and I got to sleep and recover a bit from the surgery before the barrage of visitors the next day!

It will all work out! Chat Icon

Re: Very unhappy with scheduled csection start time

With my DS I was suppose to have my section at 8am and it got pushed back until 5pm. By the time I had him I hadn't eaten in almost 24 hrs, it was TORTURE!! I was allowed to eat NOTHING once I was in the hospital, not even an ice chip. Longest, hardest day of my life. I was going loopy from hunger and thirst.

Unless you get up REALLY early to eat something that day you're going to be out of luck because they don't want you to have any fluids or food for at least 12 hrs before your section.

Good luck!

In a perfect situation, you're not supposed to eat or drink before any surgery.

I had a PBJ sandwich around noon (unknowing what was going to happen later that day), went to the hospital around 3 and had to wait a while (got wheeled into the OR at 10pm) before they could operate because I ate. It wasn't an "emergency" emergency so there was no real need to rush but they wanted to deliver that day. I ended up throwing up (sorry Chat Icon ) during my section.

Obviously in an emergency there is no controlling anything but when you're scheduled for a C-section, they don't want you eating or drinking for (usually) 12 hrs before. They are concerned about you aspirating food into your lungs during the surgery, that's why they tell you not to eat.

I was throwing up from the second the spinal went in until I was in recovery so it was a good thing my stomach was empty.

Very unhappy with scheduled csection start time

I was scheduled for a c/s with DD. however my water broke 3 weeks early. I still had to have a c/s (3rd), but since I had eaten breakfast (went to hospital from work - wasn't sure what was going on) I had to wait EIGHT HOURS for c/s! I was NOT happy, but it is what it is. The bonus is MY doctor did the c/s.
