7/23 UPDATE...Looking for some advice on an infant with digestive issues

My granddaughter is 2 months old.
She was born at 9# 13 oz. and is exclusively breastfed.

Approximately 4 weeks after she was born she began having issues with projectile vomiting. Constantly crying and bad gas.

My daughter took her to the dr and she was diagnosed with acid reflux and is being treated for it. It's now been 3-4 weeks and she isn't getting much better. She thought the medication was helping but it didn't last.

She was back at the dr today for a follow up and she's only gained a pound since she was born. She went up and down in weight but overall she's only 1 pound heavier since birth.

The dr sent her for (I believe) a sonogram today to check for Pyloric stenosis. Everything came back fine.
So she was then sent for blood work. They are waiting for the results. The dr will be sending her to a Pediatric gastroenterologists but wanted to get her blood work results 1st.

Anyone have ideas what else this could be? Anything that I can recommend to my daughter to talk to her dr about?

TIA

Updated:

So it's been about 2 months and my granddaughter is doing so much better.
My daughter had had an appointment with a lactation consultant within day of my OP. The consultant noticed the baby wasn't nursing correctly. Turns out she need to have the underside of her tongue clipped.
This made a huge difference.
The baby has been gaining weight consistently since this procedure and the help of formula 2x a day and Zantac for the reflux.
She's now at 12#. Still tiny but on her way to where she should be. Everyone is much happier. Doctors...my daughter...my son in law and especially Hazel!

Just wanted to give an update.

Maybe a food allergy to something your daughter is eating? I would try an elimination diet starting with dairy and gluten. It may take a while to see results. Hope you get answers!

Thank You.

Yeah..we talked about possible allergies tonight.
She's going to talk to the dr about it too. She said she didn't think so since the baby was doing good for the first few weeks.

But I know since diets change anythings possible.

My nephew had the exact same thing (projectile vomiting, etc.) at probably around the same age as your granddaughter, and it would up being severe acid reflux. He was formula fed though. I hope you get answers soon!

If they test the babies stool they will see if there is blood and if there is then it is an allergy issue. I agree with the PP that it could be dairy. My DD dealt with this along with bad gas for 4 months.

Please don't think I'm crazy but has she gone to a chiropractor-?

I never believed in chiropractors but my sisters baby had reflux and the Drs wanted to put him on Zantac. Then my sisters neighbor who is a pediatrician recommended a chiropractor. The chiropractor massaged his back and top of his butt and explained that babies sometimes are so smushed in utero and their alignment needs a little adjusting. I couldn't believe the difference a few sessions of tiny baby massages made for him. Nothing invasive nothing intrusive

Of course I'm not saying this is what your little ones problem is but it might be worth checking out

Pls keep us posted
And if you want the chiros number let me know!

Looking for some advice on an infant with digestive issues

My dd had the same exact symptoms. At a month old, we found out she had a milk protein and soy protein allergies. I had to eliminate both obvious and hidden dairy and soy from my diet.

My dd got upset when I ate broccoli, cauliflower or beans. I also cut caffeine out fully and tried dairy as well. Dairy wound up not being a problem. But if she's exclusively breastfed it could easily be something mom is eating.

It sounds like food allergies- milk protein and soy allergies can cause the symptoms you describe- they usually appear around 7-8 weeks of age- prior to this the baby's immune system does not react to the proteins--my dd had multiple food allergies and once I eliminated the foods she was allergic to from my diet her symptims went away- Is there any mucus or blood in the baby's stool? This is another symptom of food allergies. The doctor can test for blood in the stool.

Re: Looking for some advice on an infant with digestive issues

Thank you everyone.

The more replies I'm seeing the more it sounds like it could be a protein or soy allergy.

When she was born she could only have soy formula. Actually she only drank soy milk for years. Regular milk bother her for a long time.

She has to bring a urine and stool sample to the dr for testing. Since she isn't digesting much a stool sample may take a day or two. That was one of the Drs concerns and one reason he had her checked for pyloric stenosis.

As for the chiropractor. I don't think it's crazy. She used one for my youngest grandson when he was an infant. Helped with his sleeping. I will mention it to her. They live OOS so the recommendation wouldn't help. But thank you,

I'm going to talk to her later and mention the food allergies again, She should start eliminating a few things
Immediately and milk seems like a good start.

Re: Looking for some advice on an infant with digestive issues

i would think that it could be an allergy - to breast milk or formula. My son had some issues and my pediatrician was very proactive...tested him for a milk protein allergy at around 2 months and it came back negative so we didnt do anything. when i saw the dr again for his 3 months appt and told him he hasnt changed, he repeated the allergy stool test and this time it came back positive.

could need to switch formulas and be put on a reflux medication

good luck, i hope they get some asnwers

My baby has severe digestive issues. To me it sounds like the baby has a milk/soy protein allergy, or possibly more - which can produce symptoms very similar to reflux. How is she sleeping? Sleep can be a big indicator, too.

She should take the baby to Gastro now, I don't see why she would wait for blood work to come back. It can take weeks to get an appointment, tell her to make one now and she can always cancel if need be.

I would take the baby to the pediatric gastro. They can see if there is an allergy or something else going on. My nephew had to be on special formula (elecare) and also was on zantac I believe. If you need a recommendation, I recommend Dr. Gold's office in Babylon. My sister took my nephew to Dr. Kessler in that office, and my DS currently sees Dr. Guevarra there.

She's exclusively breast fed so it's not the formula. Could definitely be dairy allergy through my daughter.

She's in Alaska so a recommendation wouldn't help. But thank you for it.

As for how she's sleeping. Not great. My daughter has been propping her up so it helps but not as much as it should.

They are 4 hrs behind us so I'm waiting to hear from her.
