FF newborns- how many times a day should they poop?
DD is 6 days old. We started her on similac advanced. She was pooping after every feeding and pooping during feedings ( i would feed her 1.5 oz..burp her and as i burped her she would poop again) and sometimes she would even poop after i gave her her last 1 / 1.5 oz.
She started to develop a bad rash on her behind. When i called the ped to ask if i could use desitin (which she said yes) she told me to try similac sensitive to slow down all the pooping and maybe she had a lactose sensitivity...
She hasn't pooped since i tried similac sensitive rtf last night at 7.
Just curious how many times a day a formula fed newborn should poop? I don't want to go from pooping all the time to now consitpated!

It varies so much, but I was told by my ped not to worry unless it's been 2 days of no bms. My older DD always went several times a day, my youngest usually only once a day.

She should have at least 2-5 BM a day. Now it's ok if she passes gas or burps and not poop. Her body is adjusting to the formula switch so it can take several days so don't panic if there isn't a BM.
Good luck and congrats

I just went through this with my dd, she is 3.5 weeks. I switched from advance where she pooped at least 1x a day to similac sensitive since she was gassy, and the sensitive constipated her. She was in pain when she did poop. I switched her recently to alimentum rtf and she has pooped at least 2x a day now.

Every baby is different and you can't compare. For some babies, pooping 5 times a day is normal. For others, pooping every 5 days is normal. It's more about their comfort level than the number of poops.

FF newborns- how many times a day should they poop?
DD was on both bm and Formula. The first couple of weeks, she pooped all the time. Every diaper change she had what we called a poopsplosion. And then it slowed down eventually.

It varies, my DS in the beginning only went once every couple of days. His ped said it was ok as long as it wasn't more than 3 days. He was and still on Similac sensitive and only started going more frequently when he started solid foods.

DD has been on Enfamil Gentlease and she poops once a day...sometimes once every 2 days.

My DS at that age pooped 1x or 2x a day. Sometimes every other day in the beginning. I think their systems just need to adjust to the formula.

What are some signs a formula should be changed? My ds was on similac advanced for the first 2 weeks and he was really gassy and seemed uncomfortable. But he was pooping everyday. I spoke to the doctor and she said to change to the similac sensitive. He's been on that for a little over a week and still seems gassy and uncomfortable but had also gone over 24 hours without pooping 3 times since last Friday.
I'm not sure if i should go back to the advanced or switch to alimentium or the gentlease.

My pediatrician warned against playing the formula game. I think it is normal for young infants to be gassy. I think if they are crying all the time, bad acid reflux, signs of milk protein allergy, otherwise I know it sucks he seems uncomfortable but it will get better. My DS didn't poop on similac sensitive too. We ended up on Gerber good start as recommend by my cousin who is a pediatric GI doc at Columbia

My daughter was the same way and I started giving her gerber soothe drops, it's a probiotic. I give it every morning and it really helps her. She's no longer in pain. It's hard to find though, not all pharmacies stock it. I found it at a private pharmacy or Amazon. It's been s life saver!

This. If you can avoid it, the switching wrecks havoc on the baby's system. Baby's are often uncomfortable when they are so young -- gas is totally normal, straining when pooping is normal, and going without a BM for a few days can also be normal (so can pooping 4-5 times a day). I'd stick with the Similac Sensitive and give it some more time for the baby's system to acclimate.

I also want to add that rtf sometimes changes my DS poops, and that could be a factor. Just call your pediatrician to make sure since we are just making suggestions based on our babies...they're all so different, one person's normal could be another's zebra

So true! RTF actually constipates DD -- if I give her even one bottle of RTF, like clock-work, 2 days later she is constipated with very hard stool. She can only drink the powder. It's so different for every child -- my pediatrician said most parents complain that powder constipates their kids.
