Newborns and Poop
How often are newborns suppose to poop? I read and heard all different things? Our DD who is 3 weeks old goes every other day. On the days she doesnt go you can tell she is trying so hard to go. I feel so bad. is this common?

Re: Newborns and Poop
I'm assuming she's formula fed? If she's BFed, she should be going after every feeding. Regardless, I think you should call your PED- I would think at 3 weeks they should be going at least once a day.....

Re: Newborns and Poop
My DS started out BF and was going after every feeding. When i switched to formula he had issues. He usually goes once a day now, but if he skips a day by that night he is miserable and usually gets it out the next morning. I wish he could go more often.

Re: Newborns and Poop
it's not the frequency that matters most, its the consistency of her BM"s when she does go.
If they are hard/formed, she's constipated and that needs a call to the PED, if it's loose to PB consistency, it's a-okay
Every baby is different

I know this is going to sound silly, but I mean it sincere. Thanks for the poopy info! I didn't know and was wondering the other day about whether or not JAG was "regular" or not

Re: Newborns and Poop
Funny, I just asked our visiting nurse this question. Parker had gone 24hrs with no poop. She said sometimes a baby can go up to 2 weeks!!!!!!!
I am not sure how that is possible, but she said its her most common question from parents, HA!
I was sooo relived when he pooped that night, poor kid!

Exactly...when I nurse or give DS expressed BM he goes after every feed or sometimes even twice! I suppl. w/ formula twice a day and he takes a while to go after that...

Re: Newborns and Poop
My son was going every 36-40 hours on and I felt so bad but dr said he can wait up to 5days at this age and it not be an issue. But my son seemed in pain and gassy and pushing all day long. Since my 1sy son had similar issues and is lactose intolerant and changing formula helped, I changed this one's formula to Similac Sensitive and then has gone every day at least once a day since (usually more like 2-3).
