Thanks everyone. I was floored by her response, but I don't want to start in with anyone unless it happens again. If it does, I will send an email with the language from the rule and copy my boss. I am sure the woman I spoke to doesn't even know what the rule says.
Also, part of the rule is that the room needs to be lit and the lights keep going out. The guys who take care of that have made many attempts to fix it, but it is still really annoying when I go to pump and the room is dark!
I wouldnt even wait to send it. I'd send it asap!
(I tend to go all norma rae about this stuff though)
My firm is pretty small, and I don't want to cause any unnecessary drama. I will definitely raise it if it happens again.

If your firm is really small, I can't believe that these a$$holes (whom you presumably know) can't show you a little respect by just getting the f out of the pumping room!

I agree. I would without asking put a general sign that the room will be used on these days during these times. Maybe they will rest in their car or in another room if they see that. I honestly would do this myself and if the higher ups had a problem with that I would explain why again...

One girl started while I was on leave, but I knew the other person (a man), who stormed out with no explanation. I do know almost everyone here since I train everyone when they start. The firm isn't that small - about 200 people in the NY office (big enough to have a dedicated pumping space!).

That doesn't fix the problem - I don't think sick people should ever go in the room, even if I'm not using it!

Ewww I cannot believe their response to you. I didn't BF for long but when I pumped, I didn't want anyone near me. I didn't even love it when DH would walk in the room lol. Their response is even worse!!! Is this how they would react if some man was taking a nap in the women's restroom?!?! Something should definitely be done about this. That is completely unfair.

This is ridiculous! Isn't it a law to have a designated pumping space? I know many businesses have to double use a space, but your work has a space for this, and are choosing to use it incorrectly. I feel they could get in trouble for this. I don't understand why people can't support moms in this, as if returning to work and breastfeeding isn't hard enough!
Agreed. And the person I spoke to is even a mother! I guess she didn't breastfeed!
Honestly, I think she's just incredibly insensitive. I only was able to BF for one month due to a variety of reasons so I wasn't an avid EBFer and I find her reaction unscrupulous at best.

My office is just crazy. We have one guy who actually sleeps multiple times a day in his office, and the offices are all glass! And no, he does not have a medical condition. He has an almost 1 year old child and he says he is tired from the kid. I have a 2 year old, a 4 month old (that nurses 4 times a night!) and I commute to the city and work 10 hour days and have never taken a nap at work!
I kind of knew it would be a waste of breath saying something, but I felt I had to. This way if it happens again I can raise it and still say I spoke to the right person first.

ITA, but she said the room isn't MINE and that other people are free to use it. That is not the law - the law says the room should not be accessible to women who aren't pumping. Of course the room isn't MINE, but being that I am the only one pumping in the office right now I would say that the room is mine! And it isn't like I am kicking people out so I can go relax - I need the room to pump!

That's BS. At the least they should put out a memo and post a note on the door saying that its primary purpose is for nursing. And if there is a nursing employee, the non nursing people need to leave to give them privacy. (and this is coming from someone who never BF). Id give the HR person a printout of the law so they are aware.

That doesn't fix the problem - I don't think sick people should ever go in the room, even if I'm not using it!
Exactly! Go the heck home if you are sick or put you head down at your desk or go in your car.

Give them a printout of the law. It's a nursing room. It's not supossed to be used for anything else. My hr would flip bc its a lawsuit waiting to happen. Good luck

Spoke to my boss (who is the General Counsel!) and he didn't see much of an issue. So I went to HR and she says she will take care of it, but she thinks we need to create a space where people can lay down!!! This place is too much!

Yea, seriously. If a room says "nursing room" and a man is hanging out in there, then he has a lot of nerve. That's pretty disgusting of your firm to have a fake nursing room.

Just wanted to say  . I work long hours in the city and have a nine month old. I am trying so hard to keep pumping at work - but it is really hard. 2YO and 4MO and up at night - BIG KUDOS - I am impressed!

I am so glad you said something. I absolutely would have too. You deserve the privacy and it's your right. And what's this, they need a space for people to lay down???? What is this, pre-school????? So your needs to have privacy to pump are on the same level as someone needing a nappy nap during WORKTIME? OMG. You definitely are up against some wacky people in charge. I hope you get the resolution you deserve. 
And I agree with you, it must be a very uncomfortable situation when someone is in there and YOU have to ask them to leave so you can pump. Clearly you want privacy, deserve privacy and now you have to make announcements? They really need to get their act together, I would show them anything you have in writing about the laws (even if you don't want to make waves, I would in this case if it happens again even one more time).
