Help!!! DS refuses medicine!
DS refuses to take his antibiotics..first we tried grape flavor, then cherry..he took it the first night but was gagging and it was a HUGE ordeal..Day 2 he refused again, so i had to pin him down and pour in his mouth (not a pretty sight)..Tonight he refused again, and after a ton of crying and drama he said he just wanted to go to bed (it was really early)..I never thought he'd fall asleep..but he was out in 5 minutes. So today he didn't take any meds.
Any advice would be appreciated...I originally tried the calm approach but tonight i was not too calm...and he fell asleep so fast that there was no time to resolve this...ugh.

I had to resort to head holding with DH when DD was little. She refused to take her medicine too and was so sick. It was sad. I cried, she cried, and so did DH. It was honestly traumatic for all of us. I tried to reason with her, but reasoning with a 2 year old is like banging your head against the wall. I am sorry that I have no good advice. It eventually gets better.

Can you try a medicine syringe? That's the only thing that works with my DD. I slip it in her mouth, side of cheek, squirt and she will swallow. And she screams and cries too but she does get it that way.

Thanks..but DS is almost 5 years old...and so stubborn. But this is only the 2nd time he has ever had to take medicine..so i think that's the problem..he is not used to it.

Ah I did not realize that your DC was 5. My son is also 5 and we have a system. We have a huge glass of water and a cookie or some other treat that he normally would not get. So we say take the medicine. Quickly drink the water and then have a cookie. Good luck.
eta: For DS it took him having to go to the hospital with strider croup where he could not breath to be ok with taking medicine. He never really needed to take medicine either - until this November when he got really sick and we had to go to the ER. Since then, he understood and has been really good about it. Unfortunately for us it took something traumatic for him to be ok with medicine.

Same problem with DS - i now put it in a bottle with formula. you can use a small amount to make sure he gets it all

this.. plus we never flavor it. Usually the added flavor tastes disgusting with the meds. not worth it and counter productive (from the two times we tried).
She takes the meds fast and immediately gets orange juice or water (her choice)
We use the syringe and make a game of how fast she can take it. There's still some she doesnt like but we sneak it in.
Unfortunately, with AJ, we have meds given to her daily. So sneaking in a new ones is a little easier as we already give her meds twice a day (allergies)

I hide it in kool aid. It is the only time he drinks kool aid and thinks it is his medicine! AND I have realized that it is now way more easier at 4 to get him to eat the chewable medicine than the drink ones.

Both my boys 3 & 2.5 are horrible with taking liquid meds. I hide it in their drink either milk or juice. Works like a charm.

My son is younger but one time when we had to hold him down to get it in he started throwing it back up and wasn't getting any medicine at all over a few days. I took him back to the doctor and asked for it in a shot instead of oral. She felt so bad but he is tough for shots, doesn't cry or mind them much. He was so much better in 24 hours after that. I'm sure many wouldn't want to go that route but could be an option.

this is my life with my 2 year old. She will hold her mouth shut even if we hold her nose to get her to open it. She would rather pass out from lack of oxygen than take her antibiotic. This morning it was less of a struggle because I bribed her with ice cream afterwards. It was still difficult, but a bit better.

Hershey chocolate syrup. It covers the taste of anything. I mix it in the medicine cup and it looks like chocolate milk. Works every time!

I'll try this...
i was furious this morning..and took away his iPad (he was very upset, but he is still not taking the meds!!!!)
In this case, if he doesn't take them, he will probably be fine..they were for precautionary measures. His neubulizer is much more important and he is doing that diligently. But i'm worried that if god forbid he REALLY needs meds for something he'll think its OK to just not take them.
This parenting thing is soooooo hard, i'm ready to explode..Plus now my 8 month old is sick..don't know how much more i can take.

DD is the WORST with any meds.
she refuses and if she does take them, as soon as it hits her throat she pukes them back up 
I've hid them in apple juice, milk.

You could trick him - if he gets 1 teaspoon, put it on a tablespoon and tell him if he's good, he only has to take 1/2 a spoonful.
I didn't like the taste of cough meds growing up. My mom would shove it in my mouth and I'd have a toothbrush and cup of water in hand.
You can check w/ the doc and see if there is a chewable - I don't know of any off hand though.
If bribery doesn't work, use shear force - he needs his meds.

My DD's are 2 and 4 and both refuse any medication. Its bad. THe pediatrician tried giving the 4 yr old tylenol and she spit it all over him. When we force they gag and throw up.
THe only thing that somewhat works for us was to mix with some slurpee, this was for the blue rasberry tylenol.
IF got forbid something serious they do have a course of antibiotics that can be injected as a shot, we had to go this route with my younger DD because of a very bad infection and the need to clear for surgery.

They sell Ava the Elephant at CVS or Amazon. The kids take meds out of her trunk and she talks. It's really cute and works wonders!!
