Crayons/Finger Painting and toddlers

I recieved a email yesterday from TheBump and it said I should start introducing crayons and finger painting to my 16 month twins. I was shocked. Considering two weeks ago we went to the crayola factory and they wanted to eat the crayons and really had no concept about scribbling.

When did you start introducing crayons and finger painting to your toddlers?

Crayons/Finger Painting and toddlers

DD has been coloring with crayons and fingerpaint since she was a year old. They started with her at school. She occassionally tries to eat the stuff, even still at almost 19 months, but she enjoys coloring and painting more now that she is older. Her new favorite is the magnadoodle. You can always try that too.

I would say about a year, but supervised, of course. I don't think he really had the concept of what it did until a couple of months later, though. Now, at 16 months, he still trys to eat them, but does have fun scribbling.

Crayola makes a cool crayon, like a plastic holder, with just a tiny bit of crayon, that pokes out, so they can't really eat it. We had them for DS1. Might be worth a try if you think they will eat them.

Re: Crayons/Finger Painting and toddlers

I've been doing crayons with my DS since about 14 months (he's 20 months now). He was never really one to put things in his mouth though. He loved them. I suggest the really fat ones so they're easier for them to hold.

Finger painting was a complete disaster and we won't be trying that again for a bit. That he did try to eat probably b/c of the consistency.

I should add that he successfully paints at school, so maybe I just need to try a different type or something.

About a year we started giving them crayons and finger paints. We actually used to lay a sheet down with big pieces of oaktag and let them go to town with finger paint. I would obviously try not to let them get it in their mouth, but Crayola is non-toxic so if it did, I didn't sweat it.

Crayons at 12 months. She loves scribbling. She is obsessed with my pens and ways wants to hold them and scribble. I recommend the magna doodle and aqua doodle because of the no mess. She's 16 months now and doesn't usually try to eat the crayons anymore!

Re: Crayons/Finger Painting and toddlers

We started with crayons at about 17 months old. We had maybe 2 instances where she took a bite of crayon but DD was never one to put things in her mouth, so it worked fine. She would barely make a mark on the paper but it kept her busy for a little while.

AJ had that crayon set. Like upside down eggs with the crayon poking out.. GOD I hated them. She could barely get her hand around them and I felt like it was teaching her bad holding techniques. She hated them too. Thankfully she has never wanted to eat a crayon. So she's been writing (doodling) a very long time. Easily around 9m or so (just lines and dots). By a year she was properly holding her crayons, pens and pencils. She may not have spoken as early as the other kids but her fine motor skills rocked! lol
