My birthday was a little over a week ago. I really wanted either a mommy necklace with the boys initials or a nice new bag since my old diaper bag doesn't fit everything I need for a toddler and a new baby. DH knew what I wanted or at least I thought he did since I mentioned it a million times. My birthday comes and he tells me he is taking our son for a haircut and he is gone 2 hours. Comes back with my gift that he said he had to pick up because it wasn't ready the day before. It's a locket necklace. I'm not a fan but I didn't have the heart to tell him so I just thanked him and was grateful but I was still bummed esp since we are on a budget so I have to have this gift I'm not a fan of and not one of the other things I really wanted because we can't afford the gift and a new necklace or bag.
Fast forward a few days and his mom got me a gift and was asking if I liked it because she wasn't sure what to get me and DH told her the night before my birthday that he didn't know what to get me either and that he was just going to go out on my birthday and pick something out at a jewelry store. So, it wasn't something he was planning and put a lot of thought into it like I thought, he just forgot to get me something and picked something out on the fly on the day of my bday just to have something to give me. I found the reciept crumpled up in the car (idiot) and the amount he spent I could get the bag I want or the necklace.

Should I just not say anything and keep the necklace in my drawer or tell him I'm not a fan and see if he can return it? I don't want to hurt his feelings though but I feel like maybe I won't since it wasn't something he really thought long and hard on to get me, kwim?

If he has a receipt and it can be returned then return it. I would just say while you like the necklace, you really want the diaper bag, since it is a necessity right now. I wouldn't think he could get upset about that, especially if he picked it out on the fly and didn't have it engraved. I'm sure he would rather you get what you really want anyway. I wouldn't exchange it for the other necklace though - then he might be insulted.

I would be honest with him especially if you are on a budget and aren't able to get things you "want" often. DH and I are paying 2 mortgages right now so if we do buy each other gifts we specifically ask for something or even order it ourselves because we don't get things for ourselves often. I am sure he will understandChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: WWYD

Even with the recepit, you may just be able to exchange the necklace -

if you can get the one you rreally want at the same place, I would do that -

I am never mad or insulted if DH doesn't like or want a gift - I'd MUCH rather the money be spent on something he likes and will enjoy, rather than never wear or keep in the back of a closet until it goes to charity in a few years ......

Re: WWYD

Be honest with him. Men are not mind readers. You can mention something to him 1001 times and it probably won't sink in.

DH and I have been together for 12 yrs and that is a lesson I have learned the hard way. Tell him what you want. Tell him you don't like the necklace.

In the future, just come right out and tell him what you want.

This is what I would do.
